I've noticed replacement wind vanes have a brass tip.  What is the benefit with a brass tip?  Does the additional mass create a damping effect?

Actually, the tip of even the normal vane is weighted. That is to balance it so that it will not point in a direction toward the greatest weight if the mast were not perfectly plumb.

Makes sense.  So why make it brass-tipped?  Perhaps it's easier to manufacture.

The old vanes going back to the Digitar versions were weighted with lead.  The nanny state is concerned that you might eat your vane so Davis substituted brass weights for the lead.  Brass makes it RoHS compliant.

I shall not eat my vane, then.

Thanks all.
