Someone has probably mentioned this before, but I'll post the link anyway.  While browsing for images of the current CO fires I came across this NASA site:  http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/imagery/firemaps.cgi

The images cover up to a couple of weeks ago, but the number of fires that burn worldwide is very impressive.  Historical images are available dating back to Feb. 2000.
