WIN 7 64
Vantage Vue, USB Datalogger.

Everything works fine, uploading to weatherbug and wunderground

BUT, almost every day or so the data logger drops USB connection to PC
I DO have power management turned off on all USBs

The only way to reconnect is to unplug and plug USB

Log Reads Like:
date/time (station) Bulliton failed to start -17
above repeated several times, followed by:
date/time (station) Station Communication error, please retry
followed by
date/time (station) The USB connection to the console was dropped
date/time (station) The USB connection to the console was re-connected
date/time (station) Connection Lost! Please check communication cable

The other thing to consider is Ferrite chokes on the lead.
I think you'll see a big improvement from the driver though.
Similar set-up here has run continuously since April 18th without dropping once.

Thank you both for your replies. Will report back in a few days.

@4wd, not bad weather there for Yorkshire. I presume you are a 'Boro fan, and not Leeds like me. Hope to get back to europe before the end of next season. Maybe even vs boro in December  Smile

Okay. its dropped again after 22 hrs.

I have now plugged the USB into the back of the PC to see if that makes any difference. I had no spares on the back so I substited it with the USB mouse socket

Will report back

What weather software is running (simultaneously) on your computer?

How, exactly, do you have power management turned off on all USB ports?

Is there any connection between the incidents of WeatherLink failure, and hibernate or sleep?

1: Just Weatherlink
2: Control Panel\Device Manager\Uneversal Serial Port controllers\USB Root Hub\Power Management   ...... Untick 'Allow computer to turn off this device to save power' in all hubs
3: I don't use sleep or hibernation on the PC. It is turned on 24/7. It is WIN7 64 btw

Update: after 36 hours it has done the same

Grasping at a few straws:

I presume this is the standard Davis USB logger?

Are you using a longer USB cable than standard?

Is it possible that something is occasionally wiggling the USB connection?  [wind, cat, etc.]

Have you tried a ferrite bead on the USB cable (or looping the cable around a ferrite ring, etc.), as suggested by 4wd?

@old tele man
That is what I thought too; but after plugging into back of PC (direct to MB) it lasted 36 hours before dropping  Sad

@dalecoy
Yes I am using a standard davies USB logger
The USB cable is the standar one.
I don't have cats (5 dogs kept outside though). It has happened when nobody around the computer; so I ruled out loose connection.
Next time it drops I will use a camera USB cable that has a ferrite cylinder built in.

FWIW, I operate my VP2/WeatherLink connection over 9-feet of USB cables (a 6-ft plugged into a 3-ft) and have no problems, but I'm using the motherboard USB port, not the add-in USB card that provides me 4-ports for USB thumbdrives on the computer's faceplate.
Yes. That is what I have done too, but unfortunatly it is still causing disconnections. I have changed the standard cable to one with a ferrite block since this morning (my time), so fingers crossed.

This sounds like the well-known USB dropout issue, fairly rare now fortunately but a few users still encounter it. Cause is likely to be interference of some description on the mains or through-air from a nearby device. Some notes on the knowledgebase describe the problem, if it's of any interest:

http://vp-kb.wikispaces.com/USB+Dropout+Issue

(Notes were written a year or two back and need updating now, which should happen soon, but should still be relevant.)

Interesting article johnd.

It starts by saying there are really only two causes (power saving USB and interference). Then goes on to talk about drivers etc.

As I changed drivers, turned off the powersaving USB setting, all that was left was interference.

After reading the article it seemed clear that it must be interference. I do have cordless phone and wireless router right beside the console.

I proceeded to change-out the USB cable to a thinner camera one that has a ferrite cylinder on it, just as 4wd suggested earlier in this thread. It is now 'UP' for 60 hours. Fingers crossed.

So to the guys at Davies: Why do you not supply a ferrite USB cable? Why do you have the datalogger socket hanging outside the console with exposed connection? Surely you designers could come up with a better 'design'.

Thank you everyone for your input. Lets hope it stays up now, and I will report back in a week or so.

Oh.  We should have asked about that earlier in the diagnostic process.

4wd did indeed suggest it ...... It is just that I tried the other possible solutions first  Smile

Yes, I asked about it, too.

Have you tried a ferrite bead on the USB cable (or looping the cable around a ferrite ring, etc.), as suggested by 4wd?

But I meant that we should have asked about other electronic devices really near the console or cable.
