Well yesterday mark the official start MONSOON SEASON in Arizona  This is because in 2008 the NWS adapted set dates for Monsoon June 15th to Sept 30th!!. This was done to promote safety and public awareness, but the actually seasonally wind shift pattern usually does not set up until early July. This is when we see a significant increase in humidity and dewpoint. The old rule relied on the an average dewpoint of 55 degrees our higher for three days in a row to start the season in Phoenix this has not occurred yet. However thanks to a cutoff low off Baja California we got a small taste, pseudo Monsoon, of whats to come in few weeks. A group of Thunderstorms near Tucson, Az sent out a strong gust front leading to the formation of a Haboob or "Dust Storm" moving into Phoenix this evening. Here are a couple pictures of the Dust storm as it approached North Phoenix.. I'll believe it when I see sit.
I doubt that I'm going to see measureable rain in Sedona before maybe 2nd week in July. I'll be happy to be surprised earlier though.
My last measureable precip was 26 April. All time record for day without precip is 75 days (2004). we'll see.

Greer got clobbered by a thunderstorm on Saturday. I suspect Springerville\Eagar and possibly Alpine got in on the action as well since the storm moved in from the east. This is great news for the forest as it was tinderbox dry before the storm. Hopefully, this will keep the fire danger down until monsoons arrive.

Just got a Skywarn email from the NWS saying that "conditions are favorable" for some monsoon action Friday through Monday (Yay !). They are expecting the best locations for storm development to be in the Western part of the state, east of the Colorado River, however. So maybe, just maybe, we could get an early monsoon storm this year !

Well the Monsoon  has officially began in North Phoenix by the old traditional dewpoint method.. THE 2012 MONSOON SEASON HAS BEGAN AT PEPPERRIDGE!
The 2012 Monsoon Season Officially began as of 6/26/12
Today June 28th marked the third day in row with a average dewpoint
reading at 55.0°F or higher, this marks the begin of the season based on older
criteria of dewpoint*, by the newer set date system the season began on June 15th!!
Pepper Ridge Dewpoint averages over the last 6 days.
June 23rd ---- 43.5°F June 26th*---- 55.4°F
June 24th ---- 54.7°F June 27th ---- 59.2°F
June 25th ---- 52.6°F June 28th ---- 58.9°F
The Monsoon has officially started at Phoenix Sky Harbor,on June 15th
Yesterday June 27th - Marked the first major Dust Storm of the season due to thunderstorm outflows from storms Near Casa Grande. It appears that this weekend the high pressure system with move back overhead bringing excessive heat and a bring a temporary break in moisture flow through early next week. At our location (2 miles NNE of I-10 & Cortaro) we received measurable rain twice in the month of June: 0.26" on 16-June and 0.15" on 26-June. Not a heck of a lot. Uh-huh. Consider yourself lucky, OTM. Take a look at http://tiggrweather.net/wxraindetail.php (~A51 & Bell Rd - NE Phoenix). The entire month of June consists of nothing but big, fat '0.00'. At least you got something... |

Don't feel so bad, Pat. I'm at 104 days since the last measurable rain here (March 17th). But after Jeanette's post above, I've come to the realization that my hygrometer has turned toes-up, so I haven't been able to watch the monsoons build this year. |

Here in New Mexico we achieved (up here in Albuquerque) mid 40s for dew points. Right now we're sitting in the upper 40s.

46.6 avg Dew yesterday and running low 50s now. 20+% humidity and the days of "Feels like (something lower)" seem to be gone. Precip % still ratcheting up for mid-week. The big clouds have been moving in for a day or two and are starting to get a little grey-bottom to them. The 4th could be a washout here...

...well, at 1615 MST, it looks like the eastern part of NM is getting more than a little monsoon action!
More like central and north central New Mexico…but eastern New Mexico is dead on the radar. They're sure getting some decent dew points and humidity out that way though! |

FINALLY ! We are getting a bit of the monsoon ! This time it isn't in it's normal fashion of torrential downpours associated with thunderstorms. For once, this is a nice, constant, rain. Good stuff... In fact, I can hear all my landscape plants cheering.  So far .20" in the gauge. |

Total of 0.06" here. Completely worthless. However, I hit a low temp of 73.9° at 1300, and that I can handle. Unfortunately it's going back up again.

Looks like I'm done with .24" for the day. Today's high was 86 over this way. Completely unbelievable for a July 4th !
While I'll probably never forget such a 4th, I'll probably always doubt that I actually experienced it. Kind of like trying to remember whether something I experienced was a dream or reality. I need someone to pinch me...

0.19" on the 3rd, 0.01" just after midnite on the 4th and the 4th gave me my first good Dew with 59.7. I think I might be there!

I'm jealous of all the rain reports. I got 0.01" on the morning of July 4th, and nothing since. still, my rainless streak ended at 69 days, 6 days short of my record.

Here in Marana we got 1.41" on the 4th and the vast majority of that occurred in about 20 minutes. That is what I call a monsoon.
