I just installed a 500 GB external hard drive to my laptop. How does one back up VWS daily logs, etc. automatically say at 12:05 AM ? SIMPLE instructions, PLEASE....I'm not smart for programming..... Thanks Jack EDIT I also run WeatherLink(2 versions) and WeatherDisplay so if you can help me out with those I would REALLY appreciate it.

re weather display you can set that do back up daily under control panel, data back up and you can set the location...so you would select that external drive...try that

Many, maybe even much of VWS is derived from the dbase.csv file in Data. I send that out to the website every morning about 1am. I may lose some if everything crashes here, but the main db is still out there. I use Cute FTP to update the website and it's just another entry to transmit once a day.

I'm not sure on Weather Display, but on VWS, you could setup a batch file to copy all the c:\program files\vws files and folders over to your new drive.
Use Notepad to create a file called "backup.cmd" The first line would be something like xcopy /E /H /R /Y "c:\program files\vws\*.*" "M:\backup\vws" M:\Backup would be a folder you created on your external drive. Just change M: to what ever letter you have. If you needed to backup Weather Display folder, add a second line in notepad, similar to the first. xcopy /E /H /R /Y "c:\program files\WD\*.*" "M:\backup\WD" I don't use Weather Display, so I don't know what your folder name is.
You didn't mention what OS you have. But all of the windows versions have "Scheduled Tasks". You could then run that simple batch file every night at your time. The /E will copy empty subfolders, if they exist. The /H will get hidden files, if they exist. The /R will over-write read only files. And /Y is needed for the second time you run the batch file so it'll over-write existing files.

Did your drive come with any backup software? My old maxtor external had a pretty package. I run cobian on my current NAS and externals. I dont love Cobian, it does its job, but the "incrementals" are all over the place. Not sure what it would be like to restore using it. anyway, for both WD and VWS, just find the folder where you periodically updated files are created, or just be safe and pick the entire sub tree of c:\vws and c:\weatherdisplay (or wherever you have them installed) Andrew ](*,)I guess no one here has any offerings of help, so I guess I'm gonna have to figure this out on my own........

mackbig it is a brand new Western Digital Passport, and I will say that the backup software sucks. After 2+ weeks, all I can figure out is to 'drag and drop' stuff into it. Right now, VWS has to be 'd+d' every morning, still can't figure out WD or WL yet. Jack
