I've been curious about this for a while, does anybody know who/where these weather stations report to (see picture below). They don't appear to report (publicly) to the  the met office and they are generally placed in suboptimal positions. (e.g. tall trees growing very close to them etc.) I've always assumed they report to the highways agency, but that is a pure guess.

This photo is taken in the Ogwen Valley, Snowdonia but i've seen them all over the UK.

Well, not necessarily too wild a guess.  Consider:  http://rwis.kytc.ky.gov/

Click on the blue dots on the map.

Any other states (or countries) have them?

Thailand Met. Dept. has them scattered all over the country for agricultural purposes. When we're driving upcountry we'll see them setup in very remote places.

Here's a link to Ohio's RWIS stations. One is right down the road from me. If you ever see it go offline, I don't know anything about it! Wink

You can probably find them from your Local Authority/Highways site like ours in North Yorkshire

Cheers for that 4wd, that is just what I was looking for.Unfortunately though I can't find that information for Gwynedd, but it's nice to know that some of the information is available from some councils.
