If you do a bit of planning, you can typically get it for "free" near the end of the year, in November and December. Kaspersky, along with essentially every AV maker, will offer rebates that are nearly the same as the price you pay for the software.

Of course these are rebates, so you still pay the tax on the amount of the software and they get to keep your money for as long as it takes to process your rebate. But in the end, the software really costs just the tax. Keep an eye out starting near Turkey-day through Christmas for the rebates. Frys Electronics (frys.com) and NewEgg (newegg.com) typically have the rebates going at that time.

Oh...and back on the topic of Kaspersky, I've found this year's version to be significantly more buggy than the previous 3 years. I'm not sure what they've changed, but I'm finding updates hanging\failing, and the software failing to load during boot-up more frequently than I'd like to see. And this is happening on multiple systems, too. So Kaspersky is on probation with me.

I've switched most of my paid AV to MSE, works well for me. Plus free.

I use MSE on a couple of machines here but on my Road Trip laptop, I've been saddled with Nortons over the years. I keep forgetting to turn off the auto-renew. The Lenovo I just bought came with McAfee. Neither of which I've ever been overly thrilled with over the years.

I figure I'll give Kaspersky a whirl on the laptops that are on public networks half of the time and see how it goes. Sad to hear they've gotten a bit buggy with their AV - hopefully, they tackle that.

Been very pleased with Kaspersky here for a few years. I also tried MSE when my sub ran out and couldn't find a deal and it also seemed to work just fine and neither seem to slow my system down. I'm using Kaspersky 2012 now and still happy and my mom and sister are using MSE because it's free and works fine. New Egg had a sale on Kaspersky recently where you paid like 50, then got a 50 rebate, it might still be valid so anyone thinking they want to try it might want to search around.
Their rebates do tend to be slow to arrive and they love to deny them for reasons that shouldn't cause the rebate to be invalid so be careful about who's handling the rebate. I got denied when I bought it through Amazon a few years ago and nothing I did was wrong, same happened to a lot of other Amazon customers, so they went to bat for us and we all ended up getting our money but it took forever.
Costco sometimes has a great outright price too, I got my copy through them online for 20 shipped and it's also the 3 users version so do some searching on price.

For many years I was a confirmed fan of Kaspersky. This year I missed my free copy (I know a sales area manager!) so switched to MSE.

I hate to say nice things about Microsoft, but MSE works like a dream, with the exception of the Scheduling. I have my system do a weekly scan on Sunday. If I leave MSE to its own devices it often does not start until Monday!
