Joseph,

For some very basic information on programming languages, like PHP, JAVASCRIPT, CSS/CSS3, HTML5, etc. go to http://about.com. They have quite a few articles and tutorials on these subjects.

Try this one to get started: http://javascript.about.com/od/learnjavascript/Learn_to_Program_with_Javascript.htm.

There are many tutorials on the web and many are FREE as are all of the above about.com articles. They are basic but may help you to get an idea of how things work. Of course, there are always folks on this forum who can help you with any specific questions you may have.

Good luck!

EDIT: Don't forget to check out the W3C standards site : http://www.w3.org/. It has all of the details about web standards.

There are lots of useful books in the "For Dummies" series.  HTML For Dummies, PHP For Dummies, etc.

Probably available through your local library, and certainly from bookstores and Amazon.

Writing original php and js code is the hard part.  The fairly easy part is following directions on how to configure.

w3schools.com followed by tonnes of googling, that's how I learnt PHP.

Start with some small things like making a script to determine whether it is day or night, PHP has a lot of built in functions (such as sunrise, sunset times) that'll make it fairly easy. Have php.net close by as it is a great reference. Once you feel confident with that, maybe make it a little bigger and have it write 1hr until sunset or something.

Once you start doing little things, you can piece them together to make more useful things. Even if you are going to use scripts from others, it's a good idea to know the basics of the language and how to write functions, etc. You should be able to look at parts of a script and understand what is happening, trust me it makes things easier if you get an error.
