I just don't understand this. I always thought if using a "C" or "D" cell battery in an electronic device and the unloaded voltage gets down to 1.5 volts, it is DEAD! Replace the batterys.

1.5 volts is far from dead. "DEAD" is below 1 volt.

There is a chart here with discharge curves for most of the common chemistry's (scroll down to section 8 ). From that you can see that, for many of the most commonly used batteries, "low" is when they get down to about 1.2-1.1 volts.

I usually measure the voltage of the batteries (alkaline) when my wireless mouse stops working, they're nearly always down to about 1 volt or less.

Edit to add a space between 8 and ) so it would not become a smiley.

I have always wished that on the ISS and other transmitters, someone could hack the code that trips the console saying "low Battery"  and give the correct volts remaining.

I know that if I use my adapter, it is always 4.8 on the console, but in the Kitchen it is running about 3.87 v and is fine.
