We don't know what kind of computer you have, so we're just guessing. It's not unusual for COM1 to show up, even if you don't have a real serial port. For instance, it could be a built-in modem. Or something internal that isn't visible at all.
"With the USB plugged in, go to device manager. Right-click on the USB device that says it's not working, click on "Properties", and write down what it says, to tell us later." - I'm still curious as to what this says, but....
I'm beginning to suspect either a bad device, (or maybe, 2 years ago, Davis was shipping something that was different from what they ship today, and doesn't work with Windows 7, or whatever). -- just curious, Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?
I don't suppose you have your original invoice, showing the part number?
One more thing to try (that probably won't work): in device manager, right click on that non-working USB device, select Update device driver, and tell it to search automatically.
Anyhow - we've led you through all of the usual suspects. Yes, calling Davis is the right move at this point. Please come back and let us know what Davis says, etc.

device manager reports unknown device for the USB to serial adaptor looks like you might not have installed the driver for that correctly

Oh, you didn't purchase this directly from Davis. [Davis doesn't sell VWS, as far as I know] So, perhaps the USB-Serial adapter isn't what we thought it was. If there's not a Davis marking on the USB adapter, then you should call the company that sold it to you. Ambient Weather? Or....?

Don't bother to call Davis, go straight to Ambient and find out if the adapter driver disk was supposed to be in the package deal. Ambient probably used a non-Davis adapter to save money on their end. I don't ever remember seeing 'drivers' on their web page. GOOD LUCK with Ambient.......

It would have been really helpful to know before this that you didn't have an adapter that came from Davis. Back a while ago, I asked: "Did you purchase this set of things from Davis? If not, from whom?".
Ambient seems to sell at least 4 different USB-Serial adapters this week (and who knows what they sold 2 years ago). I didn't see the Ambient part number on what you quoted of your invoice.
If the adapter you got happens to be the IOGEAR adapter that Ambient advertises as Ambient brand, you can find a link to the IOGEAR drivers on this page: http://www.ambientweather.com/cousbto9sead.html
But perhaps to reduce frustration, you should find out from Ambient what they sold you, and whether there are drivers for W7-64 available or not.

OK, called Davis support. They said I could either call Ambiaent and try to see if they have a driver for the non Davis adapter or just buy the Davis Adapter for $20.
Figured, screw trying to work with a distributor to do tech support and such, so just ordered the Davis part. I have wated more than $20 of my time already trying to mess with the Ambient part. New adapter should get here on Friday, and hopefully that should take care of things. Will keep you posted.

OK, the new serial/usb came in, hooked it up, everything works just fine. Yay Thanks so much to all of you that spent so much time helping me out on this. Can't wait to start playing around with the software.

Can't wait to start playing around with the software. Thanks for the report. Back on March 10th, we knew it was an issue with adapter-and-drivers.
