This morning, after a stiff cup of java, I ordered a new Pro2 with remote temp/hum sensor, solar sensor and totally overpriced mounting shelf - this better be good, it's the years toy budget in one whack.

Funny thing was that I had just finished ordering when I got an email from a local writer wanting to do an article on the station for our local Living At Lake Chapala publication. I said fine, but you're a month early, but only weather geeks will know the difference between OS sensors on the roof and "the real deal" coming in April.

Edit: More to the story, I'm going to have to really "work" for this Davis. I called AMX before I ordered, living in MX we do that so they don't panic, all was fine. I ordered online and Weather Shack bounced the order, I called and they said "you live in MX" - I explained in great detail yes, but the order is shipped to TX with my TX CC billing address, so they approved it. This afternoon I get a note (I assume) from them wanting a copy of the front and back of my AMX card? - I asked "why?" - so we're waiting for a response.

Now, you add to the $900 cost, another $700 to drive 2,000 miles get it and some other stuff and I begin to look up "shrinks" in the phone book.

Living in paradise is great most of the time, but sometimes the easiest things are major problems, I ordered several other things through Amazon this morning, not a problem. But, our enthusiasm is unbridled - so far.

I think I'm just about ready to do the same.  I have weather stations in two locations with a primary and secondary.  The WMR200 is my primary and the WMR100 is the backup at each location.  (got some great deals on ebay).  Anyway, using good external antennas I finally got the communications solid enough.  But the WMR100 USB connection fails fairly often.  A reset of the console fixes the problem, but when I'm not at the location experiencing the problem, well...

Anyway I'm going Davis soon for the more remote location.  Eventually that becomes the retirement home so it gets the good stuff.  I'll use the WMR200 as a backup and for indoor temp monitoring.  I have sensors in a couple of rooms and the basement.  Winter, you know.  I think by Mid summer I should finally have more reliability.

I'll be watching for your posts to see how its going.

Yes, "pair-a-dice" is often true, for instance today I'll be heading into Guadalajara to do some shopping and that's always exciting, you never know what the next "roll" will be. I suppose "pulling the trigger" may be an expression I should stop using down here, might give someone the wrong idea - ha.

Oddly I've already had a guy inquire about buying my 200? I'll probably keep the 100 as a backup but I'm looking forward to the Davis.

If you haven't seen one before, your first impression is going to be:  "It's Big!"

I know you'll enjoy it.  Good luck with it!  Smile

Big? - hmm, could be a challenge, you see we unpackage things, disperse them in and among things in old boxes etc. when we go through MXN Customs so they don't get too curious. I stay the night in Laredo and hit Customs at about 5:30am when they're still sleepy and then drive like crazy for the next 11 hours to get home. Last year I had a sizable RC heli on the front passenger floor with a piece of newspaper over it, they never even looked, hopefully this year will be the same.

Cont'd: I had a second order questioned today, everyone is reading IP's now and as soon as they see MX they hit the brakes. Guess I'll have to dust off the Hide-My-IP. The other really irritating thing is the sites automatically push down Spanish and you have to dig and dig on some to find the "Inglish" button.

Ha, or "lo siento, no entiendo", I say that a lot. However, the Aduana, or Customs people, do speak very good English these days. But, they're looking for big ticket items like TV's etc and broken down into pieces most of the station are just "stuff". And if you laugh a lot and don't give them a hard time they're pretty easy to get along with, give them a hard time and they'll make you unpack every box in the vehicle or trailer.

The bigger issue is actually getting Weather Shack to ship it, yesterday they agreed to let me scan my TX drivers license which I did and sent it, last evening I got an email saying "don't forget to send the scan"? - so, sent it again but I realized the address on it is not the current mailbox drop in Laredo, so I may have to just cancel the whole deal and buy from someone else.

Happy Leap Day y'all.

...I hear "Tequila" makes a very good mouth-wash, gargle daily, at 0600, 0700, 0800, 0900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1800 and you'll be "ready" to party (wink,wink).

...of course, your breath then smells like pickled-wooly-worms!

The good news appears to be Weather Shack shipped an 18lb package today, so guess they finally decided I was whom I've been for 69 years? Actually a guy inquired a week ago about advertising a new premium tequila, I told him I don't charge, but would consider a "non-monetary offset" - so, we'll see.

An online publication called Living at Lake Chapala did an interview today and a pic shoot for a story in the April edition so we'll see how that goes. I told them they were exactly a month early, however no one but a weather geek will spot the OS equip vs. the Davis.

It was a lady and she climbed up the ladder onto the roof and shot some there as well. I have a cat I call Max the WeatherCat and when I post messages etc. I title them "Ops note from Max" etc. and so she wanted a pic of him and he's shy, but I had some I've taken in the past and gave her a couple of them so he'll be famous while I do the work?

Slow Modem, you called it right, BIG? I'm in TX, unboxed everything and will head to Laredo tomorrow and about 5:30am Friday we'll see how it goes. It's amazing how much packaging I throw away every time I come up here. I'm tired, will be more than glad to hear the gate on the casa closing behind me and that's still 1K miles.

I crossed the border at Laredo yesterday morning at about 4:45AM. I had broken the station down into smaller pieces and dispersed it in boxes among other things from my storage area in TX. I took the funnel and white "dishes" off the main ISS and it was sitting solar panel down in a box. The Customs guy opened that box, pulled it out and looked puzzled. I explained it was part of a weather station and showed him my biz card and indicated the lluvia (rain) fell into the silver cups and tipped them, he looked even more puzzled at that point, put it back in the box and said "jale" meaning pull or go, so it was a snooze, a lot easier than the next 11 hours and 700 miles to get home.

Of course I couldn't wait to plug it in last night to get the first temp indications so today, with washing clothes etc, I'll be reading and tinkering, toys are wonderful.

That's a fact, I pulled up short of the UV sensor and did the solar only, maybe by Fall I'll do the UV although I'm not sure it makes much difference here, the sun max's out at 11 every day almost.

...the amount of solar radiation is mostly cloud & season driven, but the time that the peak occurs is time-zone based. Theoretically, it should occur exactly at noon, when the sun is exactly over-head, but that won't occur if you're not physically located in exactly the correct location. Sounds like you're slightly east(?) of the exact location.

I've not read up on that so I'll have to dig into it and figure out how to display it and explain it. We're getting a very active solar community here due in part to the high electric prices, so might be of more interest than the UV.
