I've been playing around with my new page today. Not bad. Only the admin can see it.

As I noted earlier, I created an Avon Weather account, and then added an Avon-Weather "page" to it (hyphenated so I could keep them straight.) As I'm brand new to Facebook, I was wandering around in the Help menu, and found that I could convert my main "profile" page into a "Pages" style page, so I didn't have that confusing two accounts to keep track of.

In doing so, it was created with the new format, so I was completely lost! After a while, I think I have things figured out, but it seems to be missing bits that were on the old style pages. I had an "Info" tab, where I had the same information that is on the About page on my web site. There doesn't seem to be something similar on the new layout. I could put it in a post, but then it would scroll down the page. I guess I'll learn. At lest I didn't spend a lot of time figuring out the old pages and then have to do it again.

Welcome page or not ... You still have to have an account to interact with Facebook ... So, the point, is basically moot... Just my thought ...

No you don't I've never had a Facebook account, and I look at Facebook pages all the time when businesses post information that I'm interested in reading.

Steve, did you say you made a "public" page out of either Avon Weather or Avon-Weather?  When I click on those in above posts it quickly redirects to www.facebook.com in the address bar.  (Sign up.  It's free and always will be)

I'm just testing the "don't need a fb account" process and providing feedback.

Well, Crap! It worked last night while logged out. Now what did I do...

While logged in http://www.facebook.com/avonweather takes me directly to the page, logged out takes me to Facebook's login page.

Does *not* work as intended...

Wow.  Don't know where all these people came from?  I started a twitter account a few days ago and have a whopping 5 followers.  Have had FB for the store for quite sometime.  Been posting occasional weather info on both.  Put today's forecast on both at 7am along with a Hi Wind Warning from NWS.  3 hours later I had 19 page views on the weather site Shocked (a lot for me)...My average is 4 for the day.  Don't know if came from Twitter or FB, but wow.  Anyways, just my experience.

It's working today!  fb/avon-weather redirects to fb/avonweather as well.

Thanks for checking. That's so weird! I didn't make any changes other than just linking my Twitter feed to Facebook.

I still need to come up with interesting content for local viewers to keep them coming back. We've had a mild winter, so no pretty snowy photos to post. And there's no reason anyone would come to the Facebook page to see current conditions if they are already following on Twitter, or just go to the avon-weather.com web page for more current updates. I'm sure I'll come up with something. Whether it is interesting or not is up to the viewers...

Thanks again,
Steve

Steve-

So, Facebook allowed you to create a "username" without having at least 25 "Likes"?
I've never tried that, since the help page says you need 25 "Likes" http://screencast.com/t/c5otsn2yf5O5

Hi Mike,

Not exactly. Back in January, I created a regular account and used Avon and Weather as my first and last name. I didn't know about pages, or really anything about Facebook. Then based on one of your posts back on page one of this thread, I created an "Avon Weather" Page. I didn't really know what to do with it, so I closed it 2/22.

A few days later and with more info from this thread, I activated the account again. I had misread how to assign a "username" to my Facebook URL, and created it in my regular account and not my Pages page. Make sense so far? Facebook.com/avonweather pointed to a personal account that had all privacy turned off, and the Avon Weather Page didn't have a username URL.

OK, if you follow along so far, here's how I ended up with the username pointed to the Pages page. (that sounds so silly. Why'd they call it that...) I had a Avon Weather personal account, and an Avon Weather Page. I created a new Avon-Weather Page to avoid confusing myself with having both accounts with the same name, and also to reflect my web page URL. It was created using the new Timeline format. I copied the articles over from my Avon Weather Page, and backdated them to when I'd originally posted them. Then I "Merged" my two Pages, which moved my few "Likes" over to the Avon-Weather Page. I then deleted the Avon Weather Page (Whew! Confusing just reading it again.) Here's the link for merging Pages: http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=249601088403018#I-have-two-Facebook-Pages-for-the-same-thing.-Can-I-merge-them?

Now I had a personal account (Avon Weather) and a single Page (Avon-Weather). While I was reading about how to merge my Pages, I ran across a Help article on how to convert a personal account to a Page http://www.facebook.com/help?page=213602951994043 This sounded perfect! I never planned to use the personal account, and it only caused confusion. It also would allow me to use the Facebook.com/avonweather URL on my Page, which was what I'd intended to do all along. I just goofed up when I created it. I didn't even know about the 25 Likes limitation.

So by making several false starts and mistakes, I ended up where I wanted to be, even though I couldn't have created this if I'd gone throughout the "correct" steps. Smile I'm sure that was a lot more than you wanted to know, but seemed the best way to explain how I got here.

I hope that helps,
Steve
