Five days after the one-year anniversary of commissioning my Vue station, the Davis USB-logger has died. Done all of the usual stuff, remove/reseat logger, cold restart of console with batteries removed, elimination of usb-cat5 extender (console next to pc and connect with 12" usb cable), cold pc reboots, refresh drivers, etc. After resuscitation attempts I can get an occasional download, but it's mostly "found station Vue" in the setup, but "station not found, please connect" when I try to download.
Since funds are tight, wx toys aren't the priority. I think this time I'll try to scrape up the cash for a DeKay/bellfryboy logger and spend the difference on Cumulus and/or WeatherDisplay.

I would contact Davis anyway as they do have a reputation for trying to keep customers happy. I can't say I heard of any other logger early failures to be honest but no doubt they do happen.

Just checking to be sure -- you did remove all power (batteries, AC), then remove/reseat the logger, and only then restore power. In that exact sequence. Right?

I don't think I've ever heard of another USB WL logger dying like this.
I'll second the idea of contacting Davis about this. They may want the logger for autopsy and would probably replace it in that case.

@dalecoy, yep. just like that. While admittedly not on the first attempts, essentially did it like a fresh install/startup the last couple of times, complete with the page-by-page setup wizard in WeatherLink.
@all, The logger portion is working fine, as I get good variable data without gaps when it downloads. That leads me to believe that it's not the connector, although when I opened the cover, it had room for a push to seat better. I added a chunk of non-conductive open-cell foam (from an equipment shipping case) under the cover to press against it and help keep it seated. Since my last attempt this morning (with the console still in the closet next to the laptop) it is still downloading on schedule, so I'll bump it up to "intermittent" but still expect to see it puke again.
If the pigtail was just 10mm longer, it would get worked loose much less often. I have the console mounted on the wall, but the cable needs to route to the right of the unit, which is the opposite side as the logger. When you connect a USB cable to the pigtail and try to route it either up or down, where the assembled mini-usb connector hits the cover it puts some leverage against the logger, which isn't seated all that securely on a good day and seems to be a frequent problem for many. It's hard to describe, but Vue owners know the pressure-point of which I speak. Another centimeter of length on the logger pigtail would fix that.

ah, so it is still working it does sound a bit like the problem that wmcatty had, where it was not seating properly, and a bit of foam was used to help with that

My fuzzy recollection is that Davis has recognized this problem with the logger/Vue disconnection, and done "something" about it. Perhaps someone else will have better memory. In any case, calling Davis wouldn't hurt.

xykotik: I hope that Davis can help you out. I had a problem with my logger not seating and discovered a small piece of black plastic from the injection process was not allowing my logger to seat properly onto the pins. I could only see the obstruction through a magnifying glass, so you might want to give your console a good look. Hope this hint helps.

You get what you pay for. I paid a premium for Davis equipment, and I got PREMIUM service. I let them know about my problem, told them up front that the warranty had expired and asked if they offer a repair/exchange program or do I need to purchase a retail replacement. They swapped it out gratis. Working great so far. Thanks, Davis.
