Bird Poo
« on: December 26, 2011, 02:04:26 PM »
I have a solar shed light collector on the same tower as my CHRISTmas-gift Davis Vantage Vue ISS is going.

It is constantly covered with bird poo - so I finally put a board above it - where it doesn't block the sun but does block the falling poo from higher-up on the tower.

I saw a 2008 thread about this but nothing since.  (Links in posts to helpful resources were broken.)

How are Davis users keeping bird poo off of their devices these days?

I glued some wire ties to the rain funnel.

I am blessed for some reason.  Same at School.  There we have a lot of geese  flying by all the time and no goose poopies.

However, the wire method does work..  here is a site that sells them as well

I'd be surprised if you have a problem with the Vue unless there are overhanging branches which would not be good anyway.
I'm not sure if it was thoughtful design or lucky happenstance but the spinning cups nearby seem to discourage birds from sitting on the rain bucket rim.
The rain spoon could easily be a spider magnet but the vane swinging close by tends to keep them away too.

I have plastic ties, which should survive at least 6 months, here in SE-Georgia, USA.

I also have aluminum-foil tape.  So I will try that method to prevent landing and depositing.

However, there is still the problem of birds on the antennas higher-up the radio tower ... I suppose I could try the same method there, though I'd need to use non-metallic tape to avoid de-tuning the antenna.

I like our bats and Purple Martins, and other insect-devouring flying critters, so I only want them away from the Davis ...

I use stainless steel tea strainers as filters in my Davis rain cones. I just bought 10 2" tea balls off the Internet to be separated into 20 individual filters for all of the stations I service.

It's rare that poop will blind those off in a year or so. However, I did have one station where an owl apparently horked up a pellet into the cone that then dissolved in the rain and plugged the strainer with mouse fur.

Perhaps you could mount an owl, natural bird deterrent on the tower next to the station?

I cut a beautiful 40' palm tree in the front yard down because it was in the middle of the drive way. They poop, and as you said, "hork" stuff all over the cars below
