Grounding
« on: December 11, 2011, 12:28:10 PM »
We've just installed our weather station at our vacation cottage in Duck, NC.  We used antenna brackets (to get around the roof overhang) on the side of the house with a 10' galvanized 3/4" pipe.  We figure we need to ground the setup.  We're about 400 yds from the ocean and on a dune.  What would be the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Linda Baldwin

You have not said what model station that you have.     Is it just the wind gauge up on the pipe or is the whole ISS up there?

You can drive a grounding rod in the ground next to the pipe and tie them together with some large copper wire.   Rods can be bought in any home store or hardware store.

That will bleed off any static electricty and nearby lighting surges.   Ain't notin gonna stop a direct lighting hit.

In your other post you indicated possible bad software you might want to look at this lots of peole like it.

Hi Linda. As beaudog mentions, For the grounding, being located on sand you should be able to drive at least a 6 foot (the longer the better) copper ground rod next to the galvanized pole base. Use heavy wire and clamp the two together. Being in a salty environment, paint the connections to help slow the rusting and corrosion.
