After many issues with my router and Comcast modem I injected a switch into the equation and solved the upload/router lockup problem.  What I found is well documented on the web - Comcast's DNS servers behave very badly (causing router lock-ups).  I switched to a Verizon DNS and got instant relief and finally settled on the Google DNS with complete up time ever since.

The Google DNS server is 8.8.8.8 and the secondary is 8.8.4.4.  There are a lot of Dynamic Name Servers to choose from but the Comcast DNS was absolutely a mess with web browsing and WL (all versions).
