On November 4th and 5th, 1985 remnants from Hurricane Juan combined with a front to produce torrential rains that swamped most of West Virginia and western Virginia. 48 people were killed and over 500 million dollars was produced (not adjusted for inflation) The flood is frequently called the "100 Year Flood" for WV. The flooding occurred over such a vast area that 29 counties were issued as federal disaster areas....Over half of the state received at least 6 inches of rain during those 2 days.

My heart goes out to anyone who lost family, friends, or possessions during the flood.

It's also the anniversary of the worst recorded flood in Roanoke's history.

In a 5-day period, from October 31 to November 4, 1985, almost 11 inches of rain fell in Roanoke.
Oct 31: 0.97"
Nov 1: 1.39"
Nov 2: 0.92"
Nov 3: 1.06"
Nov 4: 6.61"

The night of the 4th into the wee early hours of the 5th was when the rain was at its heaviest....Petersburg, WV received 10.36 inches of rain for the week of the 5th. I did not know that the flooding was prevalent that far into Virginia.

Well, tonight was the night 26 years ago when 48 lost their lives....I think of their families tonight.

There is a great book that I own called "The Great West Virginia Flood of 1985" that I own that I always look at every year...Of course this year will be no different
