Today is the 20th anniversary of the so called "perfect Storm" (1991 Halloween Nor'easter) that occurred on the 28th of October 1991 and resulted in the sinking of the Andrea Gail. 2 links concerning the storm.  The 28th was the start of the storm which lasted several days intensifying to it's max on the 31st.

Here are the links for the Halloween Storm from Minnesota.

legendary snow storm. 28 inches of snow. The Twins had just won the world series and the dome collapsed (again)

One myth about the Halloween Blizzard should be dispelled here. This was not the same storm that went on to be the "Perfect Storm" that was the basis of a book and movie. In fact, on the national news at the time, this east coast "Halloween" storm was the lead weather story and not the Upper Midwest Halloween Storm.

I was in Maryville, MO in college at that time. We had 1 inch of ice.
My parents in Iowa had almost 3 inches of ice.

Thanks for the post about the Halloween storm in Minnesota!  The Wiki article mentions that there have been storms with greater intensity and inpact but because of the book and movie this storm is so famous, or infamous.  I had never heard of the Minnesota storm before.  28" of snow! Shocked Yikes...that is nasty!

I didn't care much for the movie about it, but the story of "The Perfect Storm" of 1991 is close to our family.  We have family and friends in Gloucester who were close to those men, including the widow (our hostess this summer) of another Gloucester fisherman lost in a 1994 storm off of Nova Scotia.

Someone caught some video of a ferry passage during that storm.  I wouldn't want to be out there.

I didn't even see the movie until last year and I wasn't thrilled either.  And, being someone who has gotten sea sick sitting on the dock, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that ferry making it's way through those rough seas!   Sick Sick

Loousy movie but with 35 years of ocean going service I have seen lot of storms like it and the one in the movie. Last nigth had 102 mph winds here in the  Clarances straits and  with that type wind we would have seen 40 to 50 foot waves depending on the tide. Many time on the AMHS ferries we had green water over the wheel house.

Grew up not far from where this ferry and the Bluenose runs.

I hear there were supposed to be some bad coastal flooding from the waves from this nor'easter taking place in the northeast
