Wow. That brings back some memories. I had two of these one for each of my earlier houses. I didn't take them down and left them.

I remember having multiple direction indicator lights coming on, four at a time on the 2nd house. I think that they were neon bulbs. I never did troubleshoot it...

Memories here too...bought one of these in the mid eighties. Had it for a couple of years then made some slight modifications. Can't remember the chip number but I bought an A to D converter and converted the wind speed to digital. Had to solder each connection to the LCD display. Got some red LED lights for the wind direction.Got everything from Digikey. I used an AD590 for the temperature along with another A to D converter and LCD display. Same for the inside temp. Had a box cut out of walnut to put everything in. Really came out nice. Was my first "digital" weather station. Couldn't afford a humidity or pressure sensor at that time in my life. Had it up for a couple of years and worked great. I'm talking "Real Time" measurements here. Surprised myself being someone working in the "oil field" and never having held a soldering iron before this! In fact I think I still have all the components out in the garage in a box.
Time flies don't it.....25 years ago now.....must be getting old.

That's the model I have that the Davis VP replaced in 2002.  Mine still worked for the most part except the bearings were gone in the wind instruments.  I still have it, parts in the basement and shed.  Keep thinking I might bring it back to life again.  I loved watching the real time readings.

I always wanted one those, couldn't afford it at the time though.

There is still some support for them, such as this guy who has some replacement parts.

You may have heard, they're coming back...

"Thank you for your overwhelming response to our announcement that Heathkit is back into the Do-it-Yourself kits business. We received many great suggestions for kits you would like to build.

We will be releasing Garage Parking Assistant kit (GPA-100) in late September and soon after the Wireless Swimming Pool Monitor kit will be available.

Based on your input, we are looking at developing amateur radio kits. Our goal is to have kits available by the end of year.

Please keep your suggestions coming so that we can continue to bring you interesting, unique Heathkit products."

Who knows what they might bring back...

I used to work at the Heathkit Los Angeles retail store back in about 1972.  I used to say that my house was decorated in Heathkit.  Most of the electronics in my house were Heathkit models that I built, from test equipment to my audio setup.  I bought one of the first ID-4001 weather stations made and had it for about 15 years until lightning got it.  Many memories from that time.  It was also interesting to see the number of famous people that were into building electronics.  We had Frank Zappa as a regular customer.  Wow those were the days.

Jay,

Like you, I also had an abundance of Heathkits all over the house. This was in the late 50s when I was still in high school. Lots of audio stuff, color TV, ignition analyzer, test gear - the list went on and on. Still have a few things that are working fine, and one (the color TV) that is not. Would be really nice if those days would come back.

Wow!  That's great!  I'm a big Zappa fan.  Where was that?  Out around Palmdale?
