I am still playing with night time lapses and caught 8 images over the weekend that are pretty incredible.  I have always thought that cruise ships returning home at 3:00am have WAY too many lights on.  From 3 miles out they actually seem to light up our bedroom.  So, I put these 8 images into a very short time lapse at 3 fps.  These images are 40 second exposures.  I was amazed to see that they actually light up the clouds.  Obviously energy conservation is not high on their list.  Here is the link: http://www.skunkbayweather.com/CruiseShipLights.html

What are you talking about?  They "make" their own energy.  And it's renewable too, every time they fill-er-up back at port.  Razz

A related observation... do you think they are ever asked to tone it down at Times Square?  Those ain't exactly CFL's.

Light pollution is a blight no matter how it is generated.  Wasted is wasted (where have I heard that before  Embarassed).  And too much is too much.

Interesting to see the light pollution reflecting off of the clouds over the ship as well.

Cruise ships at night are every Deck Officer curse.  They can generally be spotted by the look out before they show upon radar. As they get into range they start to cut your nigth vision down espically after beening on watch and eyes are in nigth vision mode. More then once we have come around a bend in the channel at nigth in the inside passage and been blinded by these guys.  Next worst offenders as fishing vessels and crabber that think the high sodium work ligths are good headligths. Illegal to run with them on but they do. Blinding everyone around them and they can't see pass the cone of ligth.

John,
I see the fishing boats doing the same thing in Puget Sound.  The lights are blinding.  It is amazing that there isn't more enforcement on this issue.
