Heh. A couple of friends and I have a standing joke here along the Central California Coast. Just about this time of year, one of us announces that, "This could be the worst fire season ever!"

The joke is that the local state fire department will make this proclamation EVERY year. If it's been a dry winter, it's because it's been a, DUH, dry winter and everything in the landscape is ready to burn. If it's been an average winter, it's because we haven't had a big fire in a while...

If it's been a wet winter like this one (after today's 1.13" of rain we are at 149% of normal for rain year to date, and 135% of the entire season), then, because of the rampant grass and shrub growth, we have a vastly enhanced fuel load.

Ya just cain't win, y'know...
