You would be suprised how many amateurs are involved with tracking objects in the sky. I would love someday, if I can afford it, to get a CCD camera for my telescope, and take pictures of a part of the sky every 10 minutes and see if anything moves in that time period. May find a NEO (Near Earth Object). Hardest part of the whole thing is checking to see if it is already cataloged or something new. I have to complete my weather station first though.
