Does anyone have something comparison of cup/turbine anemometer?
Is its worth replacing the turbine version?

I have WS2307 (yes, it is an old model, but tx20 cup style is still available) and I would like to replace the wind meter to cup.

I think my station is very good and accurate now, except anemometer. La Crosse doesn't have new and better stations now (The 2800 series has 17 sec interval with measuring wind speed!), Peet Bros/Davis are too expensive and Fine Offset stations have 48 sec interval with wind...

So, I think it would be best to upgrade the anemometer.

I have a 2315 and have replaced the turbine style with the cup style.  The cup style seems to read lower wind speeds (takes less wind to turn it).  Also, I don't have the false spikes nearly as much.  However, I have kept the turbine style as a spare if I need it.

Is the curbine absolutely compatible with ws2307?

Cup version and turbine version have different spins per second.
Are there something different also in electronics in the anemometers?

I replaced the turbine with the cup version after my second turbine seized due to the salt atmosphere rusting the spindle after only 6 months of use.
The cups lasted about 18 months before the cups fell off, again due to a rusted spindle - if only they would use stainless.  Rolling Eyes
I then went to a 1-Wire setup for the anemometer before switching to a Davis.

Having said that, I would advise using the cups over the turbine as I also found that it was better at lower speeds and did seem more accurate.
Both cup & turbine can be used with the WS23** family of stations and the cups ran fine on my WS2300. The thread you linked too is talking about converting a turbine anemometer to use cups.  Wink

I'll try to find the receipt and get the model number for you.

This is what you need.  But it looks like they're out of them right now.  Perhaps you can find one on ebay or elsewhere.  Good luck!  Smile

Also, if you buy one, be sure and tell the shipper to pack it very well.  The first one I got wasn't packed well and the cups were broken off and I had to get a replacement.

A little late but I just discovered this. May help for the time you have to wait for the cup type replacement.

I removed, cleaned, oiled (with machine oil) the 2 bearings on the fan axle (see bottom image) and got this result from the anemometer. The cup type (ws2810) is mounted right next to it for comparison.

Hey scott!  It made a difference with mine I believe because it's so old and the bearings just dried up from the summer temperatures. I cleaned out the 2 bearing indentations/wells on the fan case and filled them up with machine oil. I then pressed each bearing into it's well using my thumb as a seal to cause pressure for the oil to enter the bearing. When the bearing seats flush with it's well lip you will have the oil behind it and up level within the inner race. The fan is then pressed back in and you have a sealed oil pocket, out away from the weather. I've always been weary of lubricating the exposed portions of the anemometer due to dust accumulation in the oil but this way gets around that.
The fan case separated fairly easy using an Xacto knife (at least mine did). I started at the top where the mounting screw hole is because it wasn't glued together there. Good luck!
