Well, there's only 8 days left of Summer here in Aus. Looking forward to seeing the end of it actually, but not before we enjoy some summery weather over this coming week. We're expecting one last burst of summer weather during the upcoming week, with Hot and Humid conditions for Monday, i'm expecting a top of up to 35C (95F) which will be the hottest of the year so far. Then, Tuesday we're expecting some big storms with the Bureau of Meteorology quoting: "Showers and thunderstorms will increase with the possibility of some severe storms bringing locally heavy falls and gusty winds Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.". Then the temperature is expecting to drop right down to March average just in time for the start of Autumn.  Very Happy

I'm hoping for a long dry, cold winter, but for that too happen we need the la nina to weaken first, which seems to be happening already, so fingers crossed.

Surprising, we got that 35C last summer here, but then also -26C in the winter  Eh?

No we don't.

Our seasons are:
Summer: Dec 1 - Feb 28 (Feb 29 on leap years)
Autumn: Mar 1 - May 30
Winter: June 1 - Aug 31
Spring: Sept 1 - Nov 30

But in my area the actual weather during these seasons is quite different to the usual "sterotypes":

Usually for us a year is:
MID-DECEMBER to LATE MARCH: Warm Mornings, Lots of Rain, Warm daytime temperatures (except for day's it's not raining, then it's hot)
APRIL: A sudden change throughout the month, Some Rain, Temperatures progressively dropping during the month.
MAY: Cool mornings, pleasant days, usually dry with only a little rain.
JUNE to MID-SEPTEMBER: Cool to Cold Mornings, usually the lowest mornings are just above freezing. Dry, not much rain. Pleasant days, sometimes cool days, depending on cloud cover.
MID-SEPTEMBER to MID-DECEMBER: Dry, Barely any rain at all. Extremely hot, this is usually the hottest time of the year. Lots of Big storms, which is the only time we really get any rain at this time of the year.

Yes Autumn approaching quickly...it is a nice time of the year here. March is still warm, and April quite mild.
Rainfall gradually increases as we head towards winter. The summer weather is rather boring with the lack of interesting weather, e.g. thunderstorms. That's one thing I like about winter  Smile  Smile

I guess if you were about 20 degrees more north in latitude you may be describing your 'boring' summer a little differently this year. I mean with all the flooding and cyclone activity the Queensland area has seen. Wink

You all get more thunderstorm activity in the winter than other times of the year over there?

I'm not sure about New Zealand, but in my area the most active time of year for storm activity would have to be Spring. We do get storms during Winter but not very often maybe only 1 or 2 during the season, but when we do they are usually some of the best one's we see all year.

Last winter we had this one storm came in at about 10pm on an August night, I recorded wind gusts up around 100km/hr (60 mph) and around 100 mm of rain.

But storms do occur more frequently during Spring as this is usually the time of the year we have the highest temperatures.

When do you see the most storm activity in your area, Dan?

We usually get the 'fun' weather around the August/September time frame, when the rainy season starts up. This past one was rather mild though. Lots of rain north of us causing concern with the river levels nearby but that's all.

One thing I'm really going to be looking forward to about the Autumn will be the end of this stinking heat.
Today I recorded my record high dew point of 27.1'C (80.8'F). I have a little temperature station in my house that reported a Heat Index of up to 41'C (106'F) today. Our humidity today only reached a low of 70%, so I'm looking forward to the cool, dry conditions of winter.

The end of the heat will save me a few $$ as well, I won't have to run air conditioning every day.  Very Happy

Just have to flip the switch to run the heat instead?  Laughing

Razz I shouldn't be needing that till about July, so at least it'll get a few months off.  Very Happy

Although with the La Nina easing (and a few other things happening) there is a lot of prediction on some Australian Weather forums that we're in for an extra-cold winter. so, fingers crossed i say. I'd much rather the cold than this.

Let's hope the predictions are off and the upcoming winter is milder than that, especially after the summer you all just went through.

Personally a cool one under a shade tree wearing a t-shirt is far more comfortable.

In many areas of NZ we tend to get more thunder in winter. Any summer thunderstorms tend to be isolated convective cells. We did get 2 heavy rain events in January (wettest January in decades of records officially), but I say boring because summers usually are not that wet at all  Smile This month has seen no significant rain, and none in the forecast either for the next week...

In Oklahoma it's like this:

Rain -  Jan/Feb
Snow - March
Severe Thunderstorms - April-June
Freaking Hot - July - Sept
Bare Trees - Oct-Dec

Sometimes Severe storm season is April - December.
