Interesting that Lake Erie the farthest south and climatologicaly speaking has the wamer air that time of year is iced over. I guess being only 200ft deep is probably the reason where as the other lakes are much deeper. Another reason Superior isn't froze this time of year is that all that Arctic air was down here in the south.

while a zone of the USA had more snow and colder winter, there were other zones further north and into Canada, that had the opposite sure must have been some long running stuck weather patterns/jet streams

Thats for sure even though the snowfall has not been average it's not really to far off, If it wasn't for the open lake this winter we would not have gotton the snow we did. while a zone of the USA had more snow and colder winter, there were other zones further north and into Canada, that had the opposite sure must have been some long running stuck weather patterns/jet streams

And Lake Erie froze over completely for the first time in 14 years??? I found that odd, since it has been mild and way below snow here not too far away on the shores of Lake Ontario. Then again I thought Lake Erie froze over every year, I guess it mostly does, but not "completely"
Definitely a weird and inverted winter.

Se East Alaska been one of those are that beeen getting the milder air/moisture. Espically Southern SEAK and some parts of the BC coast. So far this year 2011 we got an whopping 3/4 inch of snow and lowest temp was 19 deg F. Then the Patern change again from driving blizzard up thru bering sea coast and Pine apple express time here Last nigth was first time in an week we dipped into the 30's been in the forties at nigth and we even hit 55 deg here in Hydraburg. have recorded 50 plus several time last week. Yet rest of Alaska remains in the winter weather snow etc.
Of course this summer if it don't rain lots to keep lakes full we will pay for the diesels running to supply electricity for the city as the Hydro pressure from low water stops the turbines. Also certain amount of water flow for salmon spawning has to be maintained.
