I've been looking for a way to log run times on the furnace (minutes on/minutes off) and I stumbled across this.

If all you want to do is record on/off times it would seem a heck of a lot easier to just use a solid state relay across the furnace switched power to activate your PC port (on 24/7) running a strip chart program. Just have to make a little serial or USB connection from the relay.
