Anenometer not working- need confirm on problem
« on: March 10, 2009, 08:29:38 PM »
It stopped working today about 1.

It was VERY HUMID  (the fog registered in the rain gauge) and warmer today-above 32.

Now it is very cold and the wind is blowing

Could the humidity have frozen in the anemometer causing the readings not to be picked up?  It is moving.

It is just too cold to go check.

It will warm up later this week.

Since the anemometer is moving, (and assuming you don't have a wireless anemometer), I would suspect you have a problem with one or more of the connections for your anemometer. Check all wiring and connectors. You mention a high humidity level so you may have corroded connections. Pull all connections apart look for corrosion (green crud). Clean out any crud you find and dry them out good.

The anemometer wire connector in the SIM could still be corroded if moisture has gotten past the O-ring gasket or around the foam rubber insert.

I just looked again at your website (History page: http://weather.sms.rdale.org/history.htm) and notice some things that look really strange. It appears that between 10am and 1pm you were experiencing a lot of wild fluctuations on your wind vane and other readings. I see some noise in the Wind Chill readings too. Did anything happen locally to your A/C power system in the school during that time period? Even the outside temperature chart shows some strange low-level variations between 11am and 1pm.

These oddities lead me to believe you are experiencing some other interference in addition to the problems with your anemometer. Have you noticed these fluctuations in the past while the anemometer was still working? If so, that could indicate you are experiencing some kind of electrical noise. Is the pipe the ISS is mounted on, grounded? If not, you may want to do that to elminate static build-up.

While your wind gauge does not show exactly North it is close and I am wondering if you have some offset entered to make it appear to be true North. Otherwise, both the wind vane reading and the anemometer are symptomatic of a bad connection at the SIM unit. That is where I would start troubleshooting the problem and go from there. If the connections look okay, then get out your Console manual and read how to go into diagnostic mode to check out the unit itself.

If you additional help, just ask in the forum. Someone should be able to give you additional assistance.

It was frozen in place.  The snow was melting and dripped over the drip cap.
It cooled so quickly that an icicle had formed and hung down so the anemometer could not move.

thanks everyone.

By the way did you ever end up buying the station from the school.

not yet, I am waiting to see how everything shakes out.

I figure if I wait until the last minute, I can work a good deal.

I did have a friend say he would host my site on his virtual server!!  Low cost and it runs php.

back to my issue, there are a few stations in the area that are still reading zero wind.
I think this was an issue around here   The temp dropped 30 degrees in 3 hours.
