CES 2018 and Davis Inst.
« on: January 06, 2018, 07:33:50 PM »
The CES is around the corner and it appears they have a spot in Vegas.    Just curious on any thoughts if the Davis camp has anything new planned?

South Hall 3, booth 30278.  If I was just a wee bit closer.   CES sounds like fun  8-)

The reports on the news programs always make it look very interesting, but what's it cost to get in?  I imagine the parking is a wee bit of a problem, too.

Its not open to general public anyway. Reason I never went and lived 5 hours away.

CES is a trade-only event for individuals 18 years of age or older and affiliated with the consumer technology industry. CES is not open to the general public.

To attend CES, you must submit your business credentials in advance so that the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™, the host of CES, may verify your affiliation with the consumer technology industry.

I guess it keeps the riff-raff out.  All those free food tables and samples you know.

but, like Groucho Marx said, He'd never join an organization that would accept him as a member.

Bummer.  Still be interesting to see what comes out of it.  Don’t most vendors participate to showcase the lastest and greatest gadgetry?

With those pass prices ... I think I will .... pass! ;)

And, that said, I bet they don't turn down many who pony up the dough ... the main credential requirement is paying.

To close the loop, then:  If we can't get in, is it usually so that anyone buying a spot on the floor (I can only imagine what the booth fees are) would update their web page with a press release that they were there, and what they were showing?  When does this start again, Wednesday?

Hi Dale,

Starts Tuesday, the 9th though the 12th.  We could hope they would update the web page.   I started following the Davis FB page.  They may post something there too.

Davis at CES ? I will definitely be sending my prayers to the cloud for a VP3 with color display, and integrated lightning for less then $500.

They should just give up on manufacturing their own display and ship an app that turns a tablet into a "console," and connect everything by WiFi. For the price of a console you can buy a very large tablet. Then people could change the colors, fonts, size, and other details of their console to their own liking. Bonus points if they have a an API to allow easy plugin development so the tablet can upload to WU, CWOP, etc.

No hint at all on Davis FB page why they are going to CES. Would be a nice surprise if they introduce the VP3...Don't
forget a few years ago they did ask for public input what we would like to see.

Then the naysayers why bother when they didn't have any real competition in the market to make changes and I had to agree.
But with the extra savings for businesses now 16% maybe they decided to go ahead with new product. Fingers crossed.

I'd be really quite surprised to see anything like a VP3 yet. In 2017 Davis introduced the complete new EM range plus the complete new weatherlink.com 2.0 platform to support it. I'm sure that some background hardware development on Vue/VP2 products will still be going on, but difficult to imagine that Davis has the development resources to bring 3 major new projects to market within a 6-month period. In 12-24 months' time it might be a different story. But maybe I'll be surprised?

Edit: And FWIW no mention of anything VP3-related in the 2018 catalog, available shortly.

Did the new products you mentioned get announced at CES 2017?  VP3? Didn’t even know the idea existed until I did a brief search.  Interesting!

No, there were only distant rumours until mid-year. First public disclosure IIRC was at a farming show in New York.

Saw a recent FB post that Davis made about CES.  No real new products to speak of.  A question was asked about anything new.  Davis replied, “not new but the Envirometer”.

A question was asked about “VP3”.   Davis referred to VP2 has always being tweaked here and there.

So there you have it.

Soooooooo.  I guess I should start looking for some good prices on that VP2 6153 and get that ball rolling!!!

I can/will wait for the summarizing "printed" articles & You-tube videos that will be popping up soon.

These days, I can AFFORD to "wait" for new & improved electronic gadget temptations.
