Thanks for those links Chief David! That ShadowandSubstance.com page sure makes it easy to understand the what's and when's. I now see that we will just miss the end as the moon rises on the 21st here. Had my calendar marked and ready for it but now realize it's not going to happen for us. Hopefully I'll see some pix from someone. :?

And it is the first time the lunar eclipe aligns with the winter solstice in 456 years for what that's worth.

Was really hoping to see this tonight, but it's snowing. Don't think we are going to see very much.  :-(

Yes, I took those.

I did use a tripod because I would have been shaking too much to hold the camera.

Out of luck for this one-too many clouds.
At least I have seen a few before.

Well you still about 4 1/2 hours or so. Maybe get a break in the clouds if you're still up then.

With a mixed bag of precip. coming in the next 8 hours, the clouds are really thick out ahead of it, so it will be very hard to see the eclipse, but Im not staying up to 130 either...

Shucks!  Just went out and had a look but the clouds from the precip closed in too fast.

I took the ones below in 2008 using my digital camera and tripod:

I also remember the cold that night.

I really like that first one. The shadow edge is so defined in it. Great shot.

nice thread..

Even with the recent storms the nights have been very bright from the moon, well right now it is very weird feeling outside, getting really dark.  So, even if you cannot see the moon because of cloud cover, you can see that it is much darker then it should be.  Humm, this is also the solstice.

Had 99 % total here the top limb of the Moon did not go into  complete shadow like other total eclipses I have seen over the years. No northern ligths either with this one.

I wish I had moved my webcam...  I guess mid point is at 12:17am pst (just a few minutes from now)  Last I saw, about 5 min ago the moon was completely in shadow and hard to see.  Now it is snowing again so I can't see it.  I do wonder about why and how do these two events, the solstice and the eclipse happen on the same day, I wonder if there is any rhythm to the math or anything to indicate something other then a coincidence and just bound to happen sooner or later.

I went to bed..  I decided that what was the use,  lookie at the moon, ooh and in 96 years it will be back. I will be dead, but then do I say in Heaven or Hell (wait, it is winter, cold and nasty.. it must be hell outside.. I am there already)...  back in 2010 I saw the lunar Eclipse of the moon.  Then the spirit of Jackie Gleason comes over, and says "Moon,  you want to see the moon?  Pow, right in the kisser.." and then we all get thrown back on earth,  were in 2096, Davis is still trying to sell the Vantage Vue

Skies were clear in Manassas at totality.  The only downside was the fact that the moon was so high in the sky.  I prefer an eclipse where the moon is nearer the horizon, so I can get a picture of the moon with a suitable foreground.  In any event it was worth getting up for.  The moon showed a bright copper red color.
