For those with Leuven Template
« on: March 15, 2019, 10:57:46 AM »
For those that run the Leuven Template, We know that Wim decided to stop hosting and developing his template and no longer support those who has it running unless you donated in the past 12 months.

Quote
All good things come to an end
I love to help people build their first weather-website, but these last months there is to much yelling, DDOS attacks, multiple requests using different names, unpleasant mails.

This hobby is eating a "too large" part of my income and facing this years bills, I decided to quit.
I will help those users who supported me by being a sponsor in the last 12 months.
But no new "users", AND no downloads at-all.

Current users check here
for known issues and their solutions
for the 2.8 WiKi
I will have a new support ticket page for the sponsors ready after March 27.
Please remember, "it is a hobby for both of us, it meant to be fun"

There are multiple "free" templates to choose from, try one of these

Saratoga http://saratoga-weather.org/wxtemplates/
Meteotemplate http://www.meteotemplate.com/web/index.php
Weather34 https://weather34.com/homeweatherstation/
In het Nederlands:
Voor de sponsors uit 2018/9: gebruik voor nu een forum.
Ik ben onbereikbaar van 4 maart tot 27 maart.
Na 27 maart maak ik een nieuwe pagina waar u uw problemen kunt melden.

Success

I dont blame him and as I said before thank you Wim for your amazing support and help!

For those who are running the template and have issues please report them here and ill do my best to help you and fix them.
(I will not work on server or back end side issues... Just template)

Please if you can , Send him donations instead of hate.... He has been an amazing help and asset to this community.

To start I know that Buoys page is broken and I created a fix for it. I am still testing it though. If interested please post here and ill post the fix.

My weather28 site has been working great for a number of years.  Lately though,  I frequently get SOAP errors when refreshing the site.  This is the weather.gov wx forecasts.  I'm not sure if anything can be done about it.

Same here.

I am looking in to what is causing the issue.

Edit: I think I found the issue and addressing it now.

True, I don't get SOAP errata since my script doesn't use the NWS SOAP service -- it uses (for V5 advforecast2.php) a JSON query set to api.weather.gov.

The SOAP access to NWS data has historically been a bit touchy and erratic in responses at times.  Likely, the addition of a simple check for valid results and if not found, sleep(2), retry the curl fetch and if still invalid, fail would likely fix most of the failures.

Hm... I can understand Wim probably better than most of you as I have experienced (and experience) similar issues. Things are getting much more complicated, it is not just different attitude of SOME (but quite a large proportion) of users, but also the fact that even though Meteotemplate has been around for just 3 years, I can see a major difference in the current world of free APIs. Just over those 3 years (and especially in the last 1.5) there has been several services which stopped offering free APIs - Google Maps, now WU and many more. Just to maintain the scripts and support the ever increasing number of users takes so much time that there is hardly any time for further development and to make things worse - maintenance and support is usually something most users dont see - thus think you do nothing.

Wim thanks for what you have done, I fully understand why you did what you did and hope you find other, more exciting, ways of spending your time.

I'm feeling a bit like the 'last one standing' -- I've been doing weather-website programming now since 2004 with a template set since 2008.
Like Wim (Leuven), Jachym(Meteotemplate), Brian(weather34 HWS), and Jacques(WeatherBlues), I fully understand the vagaries of offering free stuff and fielding many support questions -- it is tiring sometimes, and quite rewarding sometimes.  The churn of APIs is just part of the coding game for me.. My wife does Sudoku and Bridge, I do programming to keep the mental faculties sharp.

To Wim, Jachym, Brian and Jacques, I say thank you for sharing your coding gifts with the weather enthusiast community and I wish you every success in your futures.

Best regards,
Ken

It is the work and sharing by Wim, Jachym, Brian, Jacques, and especially Ken and Steve Loft (Cumulus) that I have been able to enjoy, learn, and make more use of my weather station.  And there are SO MANY OTHERS that have jumped in and develop additional scripts and features which I have enjoyed.  Like for Ken, this hobby has done me well in retirement and maintaining the mental faculty.  Eventually things come to an end, hopefully for most of us that end is still quite a ways off!

A big THANK YOU to all.

Enjoy,
Paul

I'm feeling a bit like the 'last one standing'

Just to clarify, in case it sounded like Im quitting as well - no Im definitely not. I do admit I spend less time working on Meteotemplate than previously, which is due to two things - most importantly my current job position and second because previously there were still many missing/non-functional features.

I considered calling it a day several times, probably the thing that annoyed me the most so far was when I found that one guy deleted the copyright and is selling the scripts exactly as he downloaded them and there is nothing you can do.

However it usually takes me a few hours/days before I feel like I would miss it.

I have a few new things prepared so hopefully in a couple of weeks/months there will be a new version of MT as well.

That is good news, Jachym -- I don't feel so lonely now :)

While Wim has stopped Leuven template work, he's still very busy with his own version of Brian's HWS template for Weather-Display (as am I with Brian's template for Cumulus, in addition to any Saratoga scripts/templates that need care).

Jacque's Weather Blues template set is still available, but no new projects announced since 2017 on the forum.

I neglected to mention other weather website script writers who contributed  and thank them for their efforts:
Curly (nws-alerts lives on), Scott (alt-dashboard), Michael (relayweather), Larry (anole wxgraphic), and Kevin (tnetweather)

Also big kudos to folks still active in development
Gerry (https://www.gwwilkins.org/gwwScripts.php), Murray (http://weather.wildwoodnaturist.com/downloads.php), Mark (steel-series gauges, CumulusMX https://github.com/mcrossley ) and to all who will develop and freely distribute scripts to enhance our weather websites and further the hobby.

I couldn't echo enough all the appreciation I have for all of you who have and do amazing for work for the PWS community....

I have been gone for so long that to me this is still a bit of a shock but not a surprise to me... If that makes sense... I have done some scripts for the Linux/Unix community and I can see how things can go sideways with peoples feeling of entitlement or just plain been a dick...

There is and allways will be handful of us that really do care and will go a bit further to help the developer.

I for once would pay a monthly fee to have access to "payed scripts" or get "some" sort of support model for such scripts....

I was searching around for a purple air script when I came across:
https://leuven-template.eu/purpleair/_readme%20FIRST.pdf
and a bit more search found that for this scripts I needed to contact him as per here: https://leuven-template.eu/purpleair/

And sents you here:
https://support.leuven-template.eu/scripts.php?lang=en

So I contacted him thinking that he would reply with a pay model but a big slap in the face with a "no, go ask your device developers to develop something for you"...
Not that is bad, like I said I understand his frustration and I really do thank him for everything he has done!

But this could be a good opportunity for him to regain that lost capital or time with a "pay" model.... Not all of us ride in the same boat as the aholes of this world :)
I did replied with the idea so I do hope he considers... and in the same note, I hope ya'll consider as well an idea like that before just saying.. f ya'll :)

Like Ken, coding is literally my 'pastime'.

If everything becomes APIs the beteljuice will have nothing to 'tweak' or play with

Ha ha im sure he didn't mean in that context sometimes we don't get the response we expect so it can easily be misinterpreted , remember there is no body language or tone of voice in a message or email on the screen .

Has for templates im sure the future you will see others introducing there work offering a different approach or something similar , devices, tablets, computers
will always evolve and you just have to adapt , I mean laughable as it may be now but folding devices in a couple of years will be widespread now think about that challenge adapting your website "you will in no doubt see it dont work in foldable mode" :-) ..

it will happen or has it already :-)

Oh dont get me wrong Brian, I know he didnt meant it like that... I was more less generalizing... Is how I imagine people who do opensource put up the towel... lol :P

Indeed, adaptation is part of evolution :D
Lets move forward!

Foldable devices will introduce no issues at all for pages, which are already adapted to mobile phones (i.e. are responsive).
Opening/closing the device is simply making the screen wider/narrower so in a closed view the page will show as if it was viewed on a phone, in a wider view it will show in the way it would today on for example a tablet in a landscape view.
Webpages today can adapt to practically any size from a phone to large widescreen monitor. A foldable device is between these two extremes so will present no issues to current webpages
