Trouble upgrading VWS V14.1 P22 Internet Edition to V15
« on: September 21, 2014, 11:41:06 AM »
  My Ambient VWS V14.1 P22 Internet Edition connected to Davis Vantage Pro2 and Weatherlink 5.9.2 on Windows 7 64 bit high end Alien machine is currently working perfectly; however, for the last few weeks, the VWS has hung up and therefore stops reporting to Wunderground.  A restart fixes it.  I wanted to try to see if VWS V15 would fix anything.  I downloaded the V15 EXE and ran it but it said that No software or Files will be changes and I am still at V14.  I have VWS installed in c:/program files (X86)/VWS and even ran the upgrade EXE in that directory.  The install default want to find the program in C:/VWS, so I change that to c:/program files (X86)/VWS and still no success.  Then, I copies the entire directory to C:/VWS and ran the upgrade EXE from there and same negative results.  Do I need to do a Registry tweak or delete some files first.  I have >10 years of data and customizations that I do not want to change.
Any help appreciated?

Welcome to the forum.

Look for a VWS Installer folder on your computer (both on c drive and in program files) and try deleting that first.  Then download the latest VWS version from the web site http://www.ambientweather.com/do30tr.html and try it again.

I recently upgraded from v13.x and had similar problems.  Took several attempts but after deleting the installer folder(s) - there we a couple and downloading a clean version it worked.

As always, back up data first.

Hope it works for you.

 I tried your suggestions several times and nothing is updated ("no software will be updated or deleted").  I deleted all the "installer" directories first and then got the newest V15 EXE, and then ran the EXE, no success.  Then I ran SETUP from the new installer dir (all dated 2014 files) and same negative result.
What else can I do?

I too had to try several times, I found several different "versions" of the VWS Installer folder located in various locations.  I deleted them all.

What is the size and file name of the VWS file you downloaded, just curious?

Not sure what to suggest next for you.

Have you looked for any "hidden" folders" of the VWS Install?

You are welcome - unfortunately I have not helped you yet.  Have you read this thread?

I usually don't like the beta versions but that is what Ed recommended in his response to my email to him.

Have you gone to the Ambient wikispaces for VWS? There is a FAQ section that talks specifically about how to upgrade from one version to another.
I've had many issues when updating VWS to new versions over the years. Just keep trying and eventually you'll figure it out.

You can always send Ed, the developer of VWS, an email and request his support.

Above all though - DON'T FORGET to back-up your entire VWS folder and sub-folders just in case things go south on you. It is very likely some of your settings will get reset to default values so it is a good idea to know exactly how you have everything setup BEFORE you start the update process. I actually took screen-shots of all of the VWS setup screens. It payed-off in the long run as I had a couple settings that were reset when I updated to the latest version.

Unforutnately, Ed has always called his various releases of VWS "beta". I don't remember seeing any release that wasn't designated a beta release. Perhaps that because VWS is always in a state of update...  ](*,)

Well, that idea was the result of several personal issues over the years where I forgot how I had it setup. It is a PITA but, IMHO, well worth the time. There are a lot of settings to forget.  #-o

I made a suggestion to Ed long ago, that he should have an export feature that saved all of the settings to an external .ini file. That way, it would be extremely easy to simply import the .ini file without having to reenter everything manually. The suggestions was never implemented by him although he did acknowledge it was a good idea.

Import/Export of all setting would be a great option.  I agree.

There have been many "other" great suggestions that users have made over the years but, were never implemented...  :-(

I used to be one of the VWS users who would test the 'beta' versions years ago but gave up due to his reluctance to make some very worthwhile changes to VWS.  ](*,)

I understand!  It is very frustrating to spend your personal time when it all goes to zero.

  :-) WOOPIEEEEEE = SUCCESS!!!! =D>  I did it! (not to blow my own horn)
The problem was that I had (a long time ago) to install VWS in its default directors C:\VWS and then I installed an update into my current directory C:\program files (X86)\VWS.  My Windows registry had BOTH sets of keys.  I spend an hour going through the entire registry and DELETE all keys and sub-keys pointing to C:\VWS.  Then, I did the V15 EXE install TWICE (as you said) but changing the default directory to C:\program files (X86)\VWS.  It WORKED and now I have V15.00.
I will see if my software is more stable and does not hang up anymore in the next few weeks.

Thanks for all your support! \:D/

Thanks for the update and really glad you got it - yea for you.

So far I have been pretty happy with v15, it has been very stable.  Hope I didn't just jinks it  ](*,)

I had only minor settings to update, hope the same is true for you.

Edit - do you upload to a web site we can take a look at?

I just read this post.

Had someting simular next time if you want to doe a clean install for any program use  Geek uninstaller.

This is more safe than do it by hand, look at you tube how to use it.

Cheers
