Help with ?
« on: March 07, 2012, 06:57:59 PM »
Hi Everyone
I run a Paragliding and Hanggliding site in Canada and we are currently looking into setting up a Weather Station. We have a few things we need it to do.

We would like to have it broadcast to our own website and show on a graph the last 48hours of Wind Seed and Direction plus show the current Wind Conditions

It would need to be wireless as we would put the station 100m from the closest building.

Is there anything out there like this?
I am not super technical but have someone to build the website where the data would be presented and have access to other people who could help with anything technical.

I would love for it to show data like this site www.wx.ca

Cheers and Thanks
Keith

I'd go with Davis. Their stations update wind info every 2.5 seconds. On the Vantage Pro2 you can remove the anemometer from the rest of the ISS to have the wind sited for accurate readings but the rest of the ISS easily accessed. Davis stations give you 1000 Ft to work with so siting shouldn't be an issue. Computer connectivity is not included though. Must be purchased seperatly.
I live in an apartment and for the moment am not a home weather watcher.

I am a storm chaser.

I would also recommend the Davis Vantage Pro2.  My station is about 25 foot from the house and is wireless.  It works great, I've never had a problem.  The anemometer is mounted 30 foot in the air with the rest of the unit at 5 foot.

The owner of your linked website was nice enough to post his technical details, including his weather station hardware and a hint about the software, although he doesn't mention a standard package, so it may be custom?  He seems proud of the setup and may share.  You might ask.

Randy's wx site is all custom.  I talked to him about it a while back.  I am not sure some of the HW is even available any more.

You could probably piece together something fairly easily that handles wind speed and direction.

....check out Rainwise and WeatherView32.

Rainwise makes a great station:  http://www.rainwise.com/

WeatherView32 makes the software that will plot your data as you described:

Thanks for everyones help.
So if I buy the vantage 2 pro can I somehow get the data to work on my own custom software or do I have to use the Davis Software?

I have heard the Davis comes in a format where you have to use their weather link software and it wont talk to other programs.

Thanks again
Keith

Weatherlink comes with the logger you can buy to connect the station to your PC> Cumulus is a donationware alternative.   Or one of the other pkgs like WeatherDisplay, Wetter station etc.

BTW you related to the Muller in COchrane Alberta?

not related but I run the business for the mother.

I sure thought this would be easier to just purchase a few products connect them and have my guy write some software that would allow the website to look right. I guess I will need to put more effort to make this work the way we need it too.
Cheers

Basic Weatherlink out of the box will work for , well, basic display.  Cumulus will work too.  You really need to figure out what you want.  If you want it to look like one of the kiteboarding sites (lotso wind info) then you will need to design/customize.
