Vantage Pro2 Maintenance
« on: December 19, 2018, 11:55:27 AM »
I was cleaning out my VP2 when I discovered some yellowish muck inside of the sensor ports. Does anyone have any recommendations as to best clean out the muck from the ports? Hopefully this is the cause of my humidity & dew point fluctuations. The sensor itself was pretty clean when I took apart the radiation shield.

Also is it normal for ice to build up on the tipping spoons? I found a small circular piece of ice on the left tipping spoon. I don't want to buy a heater for my station, but I also don't want ice building up either.

For cleaning most electrical contacts, this is the "gold standard":

Difficult to say without seeing it, but that's probably the anti-corrosion treatment and probably best left as is.

Unlikely, I would have thought.

I would guess it's dielectric grease, as johnd says.

A little bit of water in the tipping spoon would be normal.  There was a little moisture in the spoon, likely from precipitation, but not enough to tip it, before the temperature dropped. No problem.

You won't get accurate readings during the winter, even with a heater I doubt you'd get real accurate readings.  Whatever frozen precip you get will collect in the cone until it melts and registers all at once (not accurately).  If it bothers you, you can cover the cone with something during winter, like a dog dish or whatever you can find (I don't have a cone with spikes, but I assume they can be removed or covered somehow?).

Will my VP2 be okay without the grease? I cleaned most of it out before finding out it was dielectric grease.

My contacts have been bone dry for years with zero issues, but then again, I live in the desert.
