Console not sending data externally SOLVED
« on: January 15, 2016, 11:16:21 AM »
Ok. This is a new one I haven't experienced before.

Console and ISS are at my place of work.
Using WL software at work I can search for the internal ip, find the console and download data.
The green light is flashing on the logger ok (it's WL IP)

At home off the work network I can't find the logger using the external ip with the WL software and I can't browse to the external IP in an Internet browser. It's not uploading to WL.com either.

This is the point where I'd do a reboot.
Switch off mains.
Batteries out.
Logger out.
Wait 10 mins.
Batteries in.
Power on.
Set up time etc.

However this doesn't work. It's clearly ok on the network but isn't pushing data elsewhere outside the work place. Firewalls and outbound ports unchanged.

Any ideas people? Thank you.

Is the work network actually connected to the internet?

And are you absolutely sure about "Firewalls and outbound ports unchanged"?

Maybe the external IP changed??

Unlikely and no obvious reason that it would affect outgoing traffic. But everything points to something having changed about the logger or network configuration, whatever anyone says. Is the IP dynamic or static? If dynamic are you _sure_ that the internal IP address hasn't changed?

Have you tried connecting directly to the web server on the data logger, e.g., http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

I'm sure it was fixed but that's the next thing to check on Monday when I go back.

There are perhaps a few troubleshooting paths to take but, without a doubt, you need to be on the same subnet as the datalogger. I would first check to make sure that you can connect to the web server on the datalogger and then confirm that the network is allowing the packets from the datalogger to Davis.

If you are not the network administrator of your workplace then I would suspect that another network or sysadmin may have made a change you are unaware of. I've been through that issue many times over the course of my career as an IT professional.

All sorted. The IP address had changed. ICT knew nothing of it. I changed the IP back to the old one (internal) so it linked up to the external one.

To find this out I used the IP finder in the WL software when on the local network. I then browsed to this in an Internet browser and changed it back to the old one.

The console needed no reset at all. The data suddenly started to flow.

Thanks all.

...is a lot different from:

I think that they meant that they hadn't done anything their end!

Yes, "nothing changed" usually means "I didn't check".

So, how do you suppose that it changed?

mm, good question.

when i got the yellowy/orange console settings screen up in the browser, the box that said "fix at this ip" was ticked (as it should have been, but the new ip was in the old one's place. Absolutely no idea. If the other box was ticked ("get a new ip") I could understand it, but it definitely wasn't.

I did pull the logger out when I did a reboot as a first effort - could this have screwed the ip setting?

My usual question:  Did you completely power off the console (battery and AC) before doing that, and have the power off when you reinserted the logger?

Yes. Definitely no power from the batteries nor mains when I removed the logger and same when I pushed it in.

Then I don't think that could have changed the IP setting.

That sounds like you're accessing some screen on your network router - not anything to do with WLIP?

I'd strongly suggest keeping a note of the currently-assigned IP address and if anything remotely like this happens again then an early check would always be to confirm that the IP address has not changed.
