Weather Radar for Web?
« on: September 18, 2017, 01:45:28 PM »
I have GR3, but I experience a fair bit of power outages where I live, so I'd like to look somewhere to have a backup for a radar.

I've used Aeris Weather Maps before, but $50/month is pretty steep for the amount of viewers I get.

I know at one point there was a Google Radar API where you could use Google Maps as a background to display radar.

I don't currently upload weather station information, or I would consider using Wunderground.

Does anyone know of an affordable place where I could get radar up on my site? I've looked around, but not really seen a whole lot at this point that was less than Aeris.

I'm not opposed to using something from the NWS, but just wanted to see if anyone else knew of any options.

Hi Joseph,

Have you considered Radarscope? It is for both iOS and Google. It was $9.99 last time I checked for iOS. It does work with Allisonhouse, if you have an account with them.

I have it on my phone, it is a great application. Is it available for use on a personal website though?

Hi Joseph,

Unfortunately, no it isn't. Sometimes, I wished it was, or at least it could upload directly from a Mac computer, or from your phone/pad at home on wifi and not use your data plan. One thing I wish they would add to Radarscope is the ability to on/off the dealias on BV and SRV products. That wold help tremendously IMHO. I have sent them a request on this.

Bump. I need this as well.

-This is okay, but they overlay an advertisement. I don't mind spending a few dollars for something better without ads.

I checked on this some months ago, and they are proud of their paid radar. For $25 a month, you get basic radar without any ads. For $50 a month, you get the radar with all of the overlays, etc. Way too expensive for the average weather enthusiast.

John,

I felt the same way. I'm curious who's shelling out that kind of money for a radar widget. I'd be willing to pay a subscription, but certainly not that much.

A number of TV stations use this radar on their web pages, usually with an ad or 2 with whatever company(ies) that are paying for it. I had originally seen this radar on a personal webpage. This person was evidently (using) it from a TV station out of Colorado. I don't remember the site it was on. That was 2-3 years ago.

Several months ago I came across some code showing how to use Google Radar to produce very similar results to what ZoomRadar has. You'll find the code here:
 https://stackoverflow.com/questions/26066141/weather-radar-loop-on-google-maps-api-3

Here's a couple of examples where I use that on my website
