Down the rabbit hole with home IP address change overnight...
« on: October 25, 2018, 01:59:31 PM »
Looks like Comcast switched IP address space from 24.5.0.0/16 to 73.231.0.0/16 for my home at 3am this morning (first time for a change in over 6 years).  Thanks to my security for SSH/FTP and Plesk panel access to my VPS, my weather station could no longer upload to my site, and I was locked out of doing reconfiguration.  I could only access the VPS container control panel for the server.

Thanks to me screwing up the iptables, I got access to the plesk panel again and reworked the firewall with the new allowed addresses, and restarted iptables so all is good now.

Moral:  make sure your security doesn't lock you out when your IP address changes.

I tried keeping track of mine for a while.  After I got to 50 or so in a few months, I decided there really wasn't any point.

It hadn't been a problem (DHCP WAN IP address changes), and it allowed me to 'cheaply' disallow FTP/SSH access to the server, instead of using the more overhead of fail2ban automation.  Sure was exciting to have to figure out how to get back in (and instructive).
