PEG Goo Update
« on: May 03, 2009, 12:37:18 PM »
I had been experimenting with one of my thgr968 since it wasn't working.  Thanks  to DanS, I had bought some hair setting goo (it contains propoethalene glycol or PEG) and dabbed some on the RH sensor.  According to Dan, the humidity changes the resistance of the goo and that is change of resistance is proportional to the change in humidity.

Anyways, I dabbed some goo on the sensor and took it outside.  I haven't looked at it in a couple of weeks, as it wasn't doing too much when I  took it out.  The past three days have been cloudy and very rainy.  I just happened to look at the console today and the humidity on the thgr968 was reading 98%.  WOW!  That's great!  I will monitor it for a few days to see if it maintains the accuracy.

Thanks Dan!

When it dries up a little bit outside, I'm going to replace the 122 with the 968.  It seems to be hanging in there.  I will keep the 122 in reserve in case the 968 fails again.

On a sad note, my 2315 rain gauge did not work this weekend.  I think I might have broke it when I cleaned it the other day.  I hope to have some time to troubleshoot it this week.

:?:  So what ended up happening with your experiment here?
Were you able to keep the 968?

Well, his web data looks accurate, so I'd imagine it's working. I need to replace the batteries on mine so will try it myself.

Be careful though - you need to check it when the humidity heads to 50% or less. That's when it drops off very quickly. That usually happens to the THGR968 when it goes south.... Keep it eye out on it.....

When I was experimenting with it, I could get it to work (it had completely stopped working) but the readings would swing extremely and it wasn't accurate.  Since I got the 122, I quit trying to get it to work.

So basically, "Its a no go", am I correct?

I think it would probably work if you had the right kind of goo and knew the exact amount to put on there.  My crude attempts showed that it had an effect, but no accuracy.

Yeah, that was what I was sort of thinking about as well.  Got to get that measured amount, with proper thickness of the Goo, at the correct location on the sensor grid.

:-x  What a shame that Oregon Scientific just doesn't fix that friggin' sensor already!
Here they have a group of loyal customers, and ... ugh....it's just too frustrating.  ](*,)

If you think that is frustrating, try and call their "Customer Support" sometime.

That's terrible  :-x
What's happened to that phrase: "The customer always comes first"?
Terrible...inexcusable...unprofessional.

A wise men, once said, " A sucker is born every minute".

Since we all own an OS WMR968 setup, I guess that includes us.

Yes, Sam...we didn't know better.  We made the 968 work, but at what expense, not to mention lost time?

My wife gave me mine as a X-mas present so I can blame her for making me a sucker.  8-[

:-) Nah...don't blame her.  She bought it for you because she loves you.  =D>
When we can afford it, I know a Davis will be on our list.
It's just inevitable, isn't it Sam?
I'll wait till my station hardware and sensors fail (I have soooo many extra sensors!!), then Davis, here I come.
No more extra purchases of OS stuff for me.
Nope.  :-(
Let's just make what we have for now work optimally for us.  What's in the past can't be changed.
