Weather Undeground Webcams and support status?
« on: February 02, 2018, 10:26:43 AM »
Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forums so please excuse if I’m redundant. I have poured through the topics here and this seems to be a common complaint. We’ve have two of our weather stations online for 10 years now reporting to WU. Three others have been on for a considerable time as well.  We just added our first webcam about 2-3 weeks ago and it took a few location moves to get the exact view we wanted of the Blue Ridge Mountains where we are located.

It was initially up and running fine. Then just went offline at WU a without explanation. Inquiries to WU have gone unanswered over the past 10 days. I finally have emailed Weather Channel Corporate to see if someone - somewhere will respond. I’m aware of the reversal on their decision to not continue webcams.

Is it me or ever since TWC acquired WU the support has gone down and almost eliminated?

I really liked the early days of WU but it’s problematic now. And that’s being nice. We have started looking for an alternative or will eventually figure how to host on our own server and embed  to our own webpage.

Thoughts?

Appreciate all input.
Tommy

Hi Tommy,
Several threads here recently on WU alternatives and which they prefer...
In addition to WU (which is now showing more reliable than it was a couple weeks ago but my URL and Bloomsky webcams not showing) and which is the most comprehensive with good forecasts and historical, I upload to:
CWOP - very good for what it does and extends to MetoWest, etc.
PWS Weather - always works
AWEKAS - works well and will show webcam
Weatherbug - I don't know why anymore
WOW - good but more geared to UK and Europe
Weathercloud - good and shows webcam
and also own website using several of the templates...

You can also contribute to CoCoRaHS

Enjoy,
Paul

The workaround I found out works for the most of the time is to upload to all three servers, that way if one stops, then you can get it online with the other two.

It might be worth a try.

Of course I would also see some people either from WU or TWC to respond and set up the ftp like it should been in the first place.

The ip-addresses of the FTP servers are:

$ dig -q webcam.wunderground.com

@ n3b    128ms

Wow, slow. Is that your line?

Try pinging Google or CNN for comparison.

I just did a 10-ping cycle on all three, Google had the fastest average at 8.424 ms on my connection, then CNN at 12.730 followed by WU which was only 1.464 ms behind CNN.
