Weatherlink/VP2 download data problems in Windows 7
« on: April 27, 2011, 12:52:02 PM »
Hello guys,

I'm new here and I hope you can help me with a problem.
Earlier I had Weatherlink 5.9.2 running on a computer with Windows XP, without any problems.
Now, since last friday, I have a new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I installed Weatherlink 5.6 from the installation-cd and after that I installed v5.9.2. Then I restored my stationsdata from my backup, so I can look back to all my data. The problem is to download the data from my VP2-console. I use a serial to USB adapter, but Weatherlink says no station is found. I was adviced to download and install Prolific USB driver 1.30 PL2303, so that is wat I have done. Now Weatherlink will find a VP2-station, but only once when I just turned my computer on. When I try to download data a second time Weatherlink says again that no station was found. So I only can download data from the VP2 one time when the computer is just turned on and I started up my Weatherlink.

I have profiles in my Weatherlink to download the data and upload to the internet every 15 minutes, but it doesn't download anymore after that first time.

What am I doing wrong? Or do I have the wrong USB-driver?
I hope someone can help me, because on the Dutch forums I haven't got the right solution.

What about just installing a serial card in the computer?  Forget the extra bit of hardware.(serial to USB adapter)

... When I try to download data a second time Weatherlink says again that no station was found.

Please describe exactly, step-by-step, what you do, when you "try to download data a second time".

... When I try to download data a second time Weatherlink says again that no station was found.

Please describe exactly, step-by-step, what you do, when you "try to download data a second time".

First of all my settings in Weatherlink: "Setup - Communications Port", it is set on "serial" on COM3.
When I put my computer on and start up Weatherlink, I can also go to "Setup - Communications Port". When I click on "Test" it says that a Vantage Pro is found. But when I click on "Test" a second time (for example 5 minutes later or so) it says "no station could be found".
The same will happen when I click on the button "download the weather station". The first time I start up Weatherlink after I put my computer on, then I can just download all date from the VP2 to Weatherlink. But when I want to download the weather station a second time, for example a few minutes or hours later, it says "Computer gave up waiting for response from station. Check port setting and connection.".

So, when I test the serial port or download the weather station for the first time after I put on my computer, Weatherlink says there is a VP2 connected. And when I want to test the serial port or download the weather station a few minutes of hours later, there is no station found anymore. That's a little strange I think.

Yes, I understood all of that from your first posting.  But you still didn't describe exactly, step-by-step, what you do, when you "try to download data a second time".

Is WeatherLink still running, and you just start from the main screen?  Or do you start WeatherLink a second time?  Exactly what buttons do you click?  Step by step.

What happens if you just start WeatherLink and let it run, and don't try to manually download anything?

You said: "I have profiles in my Weatherlink to download the data and upload to the internet every 15 minutes, but it doesn't download anymore after that first time." - so, if you just start WeatherLink does it download ONCE and then not again?  Or what?  What error messages are in the log, in that case?

And (different subject) - what folder is WeatherLink installed in, on your new computer?

Like pinto said, it may be the OS "saving" power by turning your USB device off.  Here is a link to make turn this feature off: http://www.ehow.com/how_6818080_turn-port_s-power-save-option.html

But also my printer, keyboard and mouse are USB, I don't have problems with that. This evening I will try the feature you mentioned. Thanks for that.

@dalecoy:
Weatherlink is installed on the root C:\Weatherlink
It don't make a difference Weatherlink running all day, or Weatherlink to close and open again. I just can download data once, when I started up my pc. When I want to download data again, I have to start up my pc again.

Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. I have the USB power save option turned out, but I still have the same problem.
I also tried to put the USB-device at an other USB-port. The Prolific USB-driver changed from COM3 to COM4. So I set the serial port in Weatherlink also from COM3 to COM4, but I have exactly the same problems. After I turned on my pc I can only download the data from the weather station one time in Weatherlink. After that Weatherlink cannot find any weather station anymore untill I start up my pc again.
This is very frustrating, obviously no one have the solution for my problem, or it is an unknown problem.

@dalecoy:
A step-by-step description...
* I put on my pc
* I start up Weatherlink (and it will be on whole day)
* I click on the icon "download the weather station"
* All the data is downloading from the VP2 into Weatherlink
* After some time (for example serveral minutes of some hours later) I click on the "download the weather station" again.
* I'll get the message "Computer gave up waiting for response from station. Check port setting and connection".
* When I go to "Setup - Communications Port" to check the connection (serial COM3) by clicking the button "Test" I'll get the message "No station could be found. Try once more to make sure".
* To download data from the weather station again I have to start up my pc again. After that it's the same story as I mentioned above.

I think there is a conflict somewhere, but I don't know where to seek.

The next timne it hangs, check the device driver control panel and see if there is either  a red X or a yellow (!) on the com port.  It may be an issue with the WQL driver and your cable.

Another thing to try is using another program that accesses the COM port.  See if it hangs.

Can you try another cable (is your current cable a cheap  Chinese knock-off?)

OK, thanks for the step-by-step.

You have said: ""I have profiles in my Weatherlink to download the data and upload to the internet every 15 minutes,"

So, please try the following:

From: A step-by-step description...
* I put on my pc
* I start up Weatherlink (and it will be on whole day)
* Do Not Do this:  I click on the icon "download the weather station"

Instead, wait 45 minutes.  Tell us what (if anything) was uploaded to the internet, and also post a "clip" of what the WeatherLink log file indicates for the times between step 2 above, and the end of the 45 minutes.

I'm sorry, I thought it would not make any difference to post the log-file directly. I want to go too fast.
I will restart my pc now and turn Weatherlink on. After about 45 to 60 minutes I will post the log-file again.

Profile 2 is set to read the data 3 minutes past the hour (every 15 minutes) and upload it to a Dutch weathersite
On http://www.hetweeractueel.nl/weer/lemmer/actueel/ you can see the result of the upload of profile 2 at 20.35 (after I downloaded the data manually, before I restarted my pc)

You also can see on the log that Weatherlink downloaded the weather station just once (after the restart of the computer), after that it gave errors when downloading the weather data from the weather station.

OK, that was simple.

Now, what is your serisl-to-USB adapter.  Brand, model, manufacturer, all the information you know, including the internal device information if you know how to get that using the Windows Device Manager.

Yes - very strange, particularly with the intervening failure for Profile 2.  The interval is too short to be due to Windows automatically reducing power, though.

I'm currently leaning toward a driver problem - although there are a few other possibilities.

The Prolific drivers are pretty solid.  Could be a bad/chaep/offbrand cable though.  It is not a Win7 issue IMHO.  I'd say cable.

Whoops, I don't know if I can get that information. Now I'm at work, but tonight I'll try to find the right information.
Maybe the serial-USB cable is not Windows 7 proof?

I have turned the USB power saving option out in Windows Control Panel. So that should not be a problem anymore.

...yes, if it's a Prolific chip in the adapter, and if the latest driver version was used.

There have also been a few reports of USB problems that were fixed by a BIOS update - we don't have any details of erjeetje's computer.

Indeed I had the latest Prolific driver for W7 downloaded en installed.
I don't know what cable it is. It has no name on it, so it's unknown for me. I also cannot find any name of brand, manufacturer or model.

I tried what should happen when I deleted the Prolific driver. But after that I started up Weatherlink and clicked the button "download the weather station". This message appeared: "Weatherlink tried to open a com port that doesn't exist on this system. Please examine your Com Port settings.".
So it do make a difference if I have the Prolific driver installed or not.

Now I'll try to buy a new serial to USB cable with driver in a shop here. I want to know what happens than.
