Just letting everyone know we're still running at WXspots, and would love to get more people on board. Even if it meant only for casual conversation. You do not need to have a PWS connected, but it is a nice feature.

Works very well and nice to see what is happening in distant places, as well as close by if you participate :)
Thanks for keeping this alive =D>

and thank YOU Paul for still using it! I see you online all the time...like literally, all the time :D

I keep all my WX stuff on my FreeBSD server, so I can't help you.
-
Thanks for sharing, most likely will download over the next few days & give this a try.

Welcome Nick, DW7240 Oshawa, ON. Nice to see another contributor from Ontario.
Enjoy,

Hey,What'shappened......is the wxspots server down ? Have not been able to connect to it for the past few days, first the connection returned as "socket closed", now it says "connection is forcefully rejected" I have not changed any settings, and firewall has no effect, not sure what's up.

I had a hardware failure on the laptop that was running the server a few days ago. I sent a message to the Wxspots email group as well as the Wxspots Facebook page. I may be able to bring it back online, but I'm really not sure if I will or not due to the very low use of the program.

Hey,
Thanks for letting me know, sorry to hear of your troubles, for what it's worth .....it would be a shame to lose this concept, I find it quite useful but I see your frustration in the lack of users, not sure why that would be, after all, I haven't seen any other software with even a similar interface, otherwise we'd be using it. Anyway, losing something sometimes encourages people to respond positively and try to save it.
Take care.

I've been able to get the server back online. However, consider this a test run because I'm not 100% sure if it's stable, but if it is, it should stay up :)
-
Thanks Scott,
I am back online and will be a tester.
Enjoy,
Paul

Looks like it's been stable throughout the night. It was the first 12 or so hours I was concerned with, but I think we're good. If there was going to be a problem, it should have occurred by now.

Hey,
Thanks Scott for getting this back up, I am putting a link to this on my website to try and encourage more users to use this. If everyone put a link on their sites this would be awesome, even if only 1 % of users used it, it would make this interface successful, thinking how many weather stations out there having websites, literally hundreds throughout the states and Canada..
Anyway, thanks again.

Sounds good Nick. I've always been a big fan of WxSpots. If used the way it's meant to be used, it can be an outstanding communications tool outside of normal social media outlets.

FYI for anyone wondering, WxSpots is back up after a few months of being offline. I had decided to take it offline because of server issues and low usage numbers, but I've gotten a few requests to turn it back online. So I have :)
I made a few changes to the server so it may be more robust now. If only it would get used :)

Hi Scott, and thanks.
I am back connected.

Seems like this is the most stable the server has ever been....maybe a sporadic network blip here and or there but over all, MUCH more stable than over the past few years.
Now if only we had more users :/
-
Hey,
Great that you've had second thoughts, I like Paul have returned to support your endeavours -
NOW COME ON EVERYONE - THIS ONLY WORKS WITH MANY USERS - JUST LIKE WEATHER RADIO - AND YES YOU SUPPORT THAT - SO SUPPORT THIS TOO - PLEASE !!

Thanks Scott,
We don't get a lot of severe weather here, not counting our current heat wave, but it is nice to see what is happening at other places on the continent.
Enjoy,

Thought I would try to look at WXSpots and see what it's all about. Clicking on the link in the first post shows that the site is not available. Is this a good link or not? I also tried just going to http://wxspots.com (http://www.wxspots.com/) and get the same indication.

Well darn...looks like you're right! Looks like the author of the program has decided to delete the website :(
He gave up the server a long time ago and wanted to completely shut down WxSpots, but I didn't want to see it go so I took over the server operations. I'll have to get with him to see if I can get a copy of the set up files to host somewhere.
-
I got with the program's author and he advised me the site is back up :-)
-
This is pretty clunky software. First I download the .exe file then up comes a box for me to fill in and then I get a message about something wrong and then I have to back to the .exe and the stupid box comes back up and then I fill it out again and then I get the error message. If you have a product you would the people to use then it has to be usable and yours isn't.
-
I have no problem with it and use it all the time.
Enjoy,
Paul

Well Paul apparently you never read my post. I said I can't even set it up. I downloaded the .exe and when you click on that there is a form to fill out. If there is an error in the form you are kicked out and then have to go back but it doesn't tell you what the error was. So at this point it won't even install on my computer. So, tell me how to do it.

It's not my software so unfortunately I'm unable to diagnose the coding side. This software was written many years ago by a well known HAM radio operator. Usage has been up and down over the years. The author had decided he no longer wanted to support the software so I volunteered to run it here on a small server. That's where it still resides now. Sorry I can't be of any help, but I've never had a problem with it either. The only time the login box gave me an error was when I was already logged in. Once that log in box is filled out, you do not need to fill it out ever again.
-
Oh I read your post, more than once! For me it was quite easy to setup.
Rather than immediately trash talk I would first have asked for help. However I am not the one that can provide help.
It is an older program and unfortunately very view ongoing users at the moment, but works for me and I enjoy it, especially when there is some very active weather that participants are reporting - tornadoes, floods...
Enjoy,
Paul
