WD eval ver
« on: October 23, 2007, 01:15:58 PM »
Just downloaded the most recent version of WD. It tells me when I run it that my trial has expired???? Any idea(s) what might be happening. I'm considering running WD along with VWS. I like some of the reports that are created by WD the VWS doesn't do. I was planning on running WD in stationless mode. What csv file(s) need to be imported? Or would it be better to run WD along with VWS on the same computer? I realize this would require a comport sharing program. I have a OS WMR-968 station. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Anthony

If you have had it installed on your computer before, yeah, it will show as expired now.
It's only a one time deal.  ;)

Got the first problem taken care of. Now on to my other questions. What file or files (csv) do I need to inport into WD. Right now I have it reading a VWS data csv file. Can you import any or all of the database files from VWS?

Thanks,
Anthony

As I said. I have WD pointing to the csv file(s) created by VWS. Note, WD is not on the same computer is VWS. I have WD reading the data.csv file that is in the vws\data dir. It's displaying the temp & dumidity correctly. Baro with in .01 rain is not being shown at all. I have tried the data 2 & dbase with the same results. Have even tried the daily file in vws\data\csv with the same results. Is there a port sharing program that will work across a network or does VWS and WD need to be on the same computer with a port sharing program?

Thanks,
Anthony

Just curious, why import data from one program to another.
Does VWS produce something that WD can't?

WD does have a wider variety of tags than VWS.

This is the part that I'm not fully understanding.

Is there an advantage to why WD is pointing at the VWS csv's?

Anthony,
I would recommend using a virtual comport program rather than the CSV method.  I use GPSGate from www.franson.com to link WD and VWS to my WM918 and have done so for almost a couple of years without problems.  It sells itself as a GPS sharing program, but is great at sharing com ports. You can even use it to share com ports to a local machine and export a virtual com port via TCP/IP. (You could install a 14 day trial version on both your current machines).
Before using a virtual com port program, I was finding the odd data quirk being exported from VWS to WD - now both programs read the WM918 independently.

Curly,
WD can be run in 3 differend modes:
1 Weather station conected to computer running WD
2. CSV mode. WD pulls it's data from a CSV file created by another weather station program (VWS)
3. Stationless mode. Data is manually entered. (I assume)

Caresman, thanks for the info. Will check it out.

Thanks,
Anthony

Normally folks will use local METAR data in this mode.

I just couldn't see what advantage VWS has over WD.

Why not have the console connect with WD and let it do all its weather station stuff and let VWS handle the metars, mesonets and other data? There would be no comm port program needed, your station data will be about 6 seconds newer, and neither program will be dependant on the other.

Two programs can not use the same port on the same computer. You need to have some sort of port sharing program installed. And the more I mess with WD. I believe I'll just stick with VWS for now.

what weather station type do you have Anthony (maybe you could update your profile?)
if a wmr968 , then you can use a Y splitter

also:

what is this , or so I've heard, bit all about that you keep on repeating?
can you give more information on your whole motives on this venture Anthony?
(I am curious)
also, what are your PC specs (maybe add those to your profile as well) (because in an email you sent me, it does not look like your pc would be capable of running both the programs at the same time on the same pc, yes no?)

As for the station. It's a WMR-968. The weather computer is a Gateway with a 433 MHz processor and 128 meg of memory. So your right. It would not be capable of running both programs. I am aware of the "Y" splitter. As for the reports. This is what I gathering just from what little bit I've read. The program does infact have many tags that VWS does not (to many to list). It does fire weather. Whic I think is cool. Would be a great addition to VWS. I am only running and trial right now and will probably not purchase the program. I'm concentrating more now on saving $$$ for a new Davis next spring.

As for the profile. I will get it updated. Thats one of the biggest gripes on the other forum I belong to and am a Global Moderator.
