anemometer vane stiff
« on: December 06, 2008, 02:28:34 PM »
ok got my vp2 wireless in june...  had some freezing rain last night went to check on station to make sure it wasn't frozen up or anything.... everything was fine until i checked the anemometer. the vane was  somewhat hard to move the cups are nice and smooth like they should be but the vane takes a little bit of effort to move(like somethings dragging on it) i checked for ice and there is none. any ideas?? i really hope i dont have to send it in.

Put a hair drier to it.

well living in montana means the weather does odd things... no need for a hair dryer its now 45 degrees lol. still somewhat stiff doesn't seem to really  hurt the readings but still.... shouldn't have resistance. i double checked it for ice and there is none what so ever

Take the allen wrench that came with your hardware, loosen the set screw, reposition the wind cups (probably needs a nudge upward) on the mast, and retighten the set screw.

I haven't had one apart but the Davis wind vane appears to have some type of internal damping to help stabilize the direction readings. Even a brand new wind vane exhibits some resistance to rotation. Also, the large tail fin generates a lot of drag when you spin the wind vane by hand. If the vane turns smoothly you most likely don't have a problem. On the other hand, the anemometer cups should turn with the slightest touch.
