new computer-cannot use datalogger
« on: December 29, 2007, 02:23:56 PM »
I just found out that I cannot attach my Davis datalogger to my new computer :-(  It does not have a serial port with pins. Is there anything I can do about this?

Buy a PCI serial card, install it and you are all set to go.

You can also buy a serial to USB converter like the ones listed here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=usb+to+serial&x=0&y=0.  They have worked well for numerous people.

You know what else it probably doesn't have? A parallel port... I've got an old scanner that is parallel, had to move it to an older computer to use...

Ah, progress!  :-)

Speaking of progress, I had to laugh. I've seen the ads for digital frames, of course, but I haven't given them much consideration. Today I went to an electronics store and passed by them. It made me think of Star Wars Epsidode II(?) when Amidala took Whine-akin, er...Anakin, to her home to meet her family, and there were animated photos in her bedroom --- I recall thinking, "Yeah right. That would be very distracting." Here we are just a few years later. I'm still waiting for teleportation and Dr. McCoy's little hand held cure-all.

Technology... my how we've become dependent on it.

(Sorry ... off topic.)

I wouldn't even bring USB into the mix. Just go with a serial card and be done with it.  =D>

Not everybody. The only issue I've had is that when I have to restart the computer(which isn't too often) I have to unplug the the serial to usb adapter then plug it back in. Other then that it works fine.

I agree that a serial_PCI card is the way to go. I have an 8 port one in my weather computer for all of my needs.

However, pay attention to the case dimensions when ordering the card. Standard cases are OK, but some new slimline cases require short cards.

Having just started up my new station last night I have so far, (all of about 15 hrs), experienced no problems with serial to usb adapter for WeatherLink. Is the problem with straight usb connection, or have all the reported headaches also been involving the serial/usb adapter? Not being a computer whiz by any means I purchased the adapter thinking the problems were all with just usb's. I guess i'm wondering with any usb - WeatherLink combo will these problems pop up?

Not everyone has reported problems with USB, and those who have had problems have had them in both direct and adapter configurations. Enough people have reported problems that when you have the serial option, which is rock solid, it's kind of a no-brainer to go that route. I've used both in various installations and the only one I've ever had issues with is USB.

PCI serial cards are dirt cheap and most are very easy to install.

I am happy to report that all is operational now on my new computer (except the lightning data).  Wouldn't you know it, I found the card in the last place I looked, just up the street from me. The owner of a local computer shop had a pci serial card and he installed it, all for twenty dollars 8-)

good call on going for the serial datalogger.  I experienced no end (literally) of problems with my usb datalogger......see the related lengthy thread on this topic. I replaced it with a serial logger, and have been up and running continuously since 21 December (I hope I haven't jinxed myself now!).

I am now militantly anti-usb.
