Holiday Inn, What in the world.
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:41:59 AM »
Has anyone noticed that Wunderground Interactive maps now display the location of all Holiday Inns by default?  I guess they must of signed a major advertising contract with them.

I do not like the icon appearing on my maps, so I will be remove the default setting for that.  What are anyone else's thought about this?  Good or Bad.

Sam,
I could not see any icons on my map, but noticed after your post that its "checked" in my overlay section.  So I thought maybe Canada was not loaded yet, did a wu search on Buffalo.  Still no icon.  Strange.  Then I noticed I was not logged in... I logged in and the Holiday Inn check box was now empty.  So it does not look like they forced it upon me.   But still even once clicked no icons appeared.  Maybe they got a backlash and turned it off? (guess not if Jim just saw it)

Hey Mack.  I noticed that they forced it onto any "non-member" or "non-logged in member".

For example.  I am surfing from workplace to my site without logging in on wunderground, and it shows 2 near me
http://www.mountcrawfordweather.org/livemap.html  (then click the "-" once for the zoom out)
Now once there, again like you said, you can turn it off in the settings.  But if you clear your cookies, like I do at the end of the workday, of course it will return. ](*,)

I suppose it's an additional revenue stream for them, and it does not bother me much.  I just hope it doesn't turn into a ton of other advertisements in the interactive maps.

Ahh, see them now.  I was just looking at the wundermaps you get from the PWS pages.  I know for sure Canadian Holiday inns on not on there now.  Oddly enough the downtown Buffalo one I looked for was not there  either.  But I did see a bunch on your map and the pws version around Niagara.

It is a bit annoying.  I guess they could argue the non logged in version is the "ad version" and our pws free no ad versions are clean...  But still.  Can you imagine is Starbucks signed on to advertise, you would not be able to see the maps through the haze of green circles covering every square inch....

I would rather for them to have turn them off by default and you have the option to turn them on.  Guess that wasn't part of the agreement.

The tornado track listing is pretty neat though!
I had forgotten about the twisters that came close to hear back in 75. My next door neighbor said it was
down right scary for a few minutes here!
