Paul, I think you didnt get my point - yes of course, I also want to know where my visitors are coming from, how many there are, which sites they look at etc etc - that is in fact something you should even aim to do and watch to get better feedback.

However, the point here is - this is for you - not something you display (flashing in an animated GIF :D) on your site. Google Analytics is great for this, it gives you detailed reports, graphs and maps, but you just dont put them on your site publicly.

Trust me it not only is misleading, slows down the page, but looks extremely amateur and outdated.

I agree with you Jachym.  I have seen how this data can be completely misleading and inflated.  In addition, for sites that are not getting a crazy amount of hits, why would someone want to "embarrass" themselves showing only a few website hits a day?

:D :D :D +1

I just didnt want to say it that straight :D

I really know about a few pages that any time I look at them show "currently 30 people online" and show weather conditions for some very small town in the middle of nowhere... Even "better" is also including a map, which is then full of dots in Russia, China.....

And as I have mentioned already, if for example I want to double the number of visitors to my site and I want to do it without any "cheating" I can simply half the interval that counts as a new visit. The global standard is 20 or 30 minutes, so if you look at meteotemplate.com twice within 30 minutes you will only be counted once.

In addition, Google Analytics has the most sophisticated bot filtering algorithms and so what you see in your GA is most likely real users.

Ah ok, but with google analytics doesn't show visitors number on Home Page.

Jachym,
it seems history block doesn't work ..... 2.1 version.
Airquality also....i think.
Could you check please?
Thanks,

Alessandro

Hi Alessandro,
yes, the "block" does not work, because look carefully, this is update of the history plugin, not block, you need to now download the history block again and replace it. You used script for plugin as a block.

Visitor count:
I have explained this here on the forum before some time ago. Placing a visitor counter on a website is sort of the "internet of the 90s" idea. It is something you should try to avoid if you want your site to look professional. This is something that is important for you as a webmaster (which is why I included Google Analytics), but there is no reason why your users should look at this. Now, lets also be honest - our sites are not getting millions of hits every day, not to mention the fact these scripts will slow down your website.

Sometimes I see these on websites and most of them also cannot even filter out the internet bots. So you then see a page with some local weather conditions from some very small city and any time you look the visitor count shows thousands of visits every day and always at least 30 people online - which of course is nonsense.

So it really tells you nothing - it also depends how you count it, what you count as a new visit - each page opening? Do you cache it? Use user IPs? How long is the interval that you count as "new visit" etc etc.

This link greatly summarizes all the things you want to avoid today:
https://ivycat.com/7-signs-that-your-website-is-stuck-in-the-90s/

Ok Jachym,
but history block doesn't work?

No problem, but you now need to re-download the history BLOCK and then use that :-)

Hi Alessandro,
the location is set at the bottom in the Main settings.

I still dont understand why you want to use the whos-online plugin. Google Analytics will give you much more options - it will show you number of visitors, which country they came from, how long they spent on your site, which sites are being visited etc.
It is also built-in the template, so it will count visits to all pages of the template, not just homepage and in google analytics you can then view graphs, tables, choose time intervals etc etc. Even real-time values. So Im not sure I get why you want to try implementing a different script, which Im not sure will work because it is likely to clash with other scripts and it will do nothing more than GA can do.

Hi Alessandro, you've done a great job to set up to your likes and your available resources =D>
I like it, except for one comment, and it is individual preference - I don't like italic [-X

Enjoy,
Paul

Italics in English is this:

this text is in italics

I guess it was unfortunate that you just happen to be from Italy :D

You can, but if you like the one you have now use it! This is how I wanted Meteotemplate to be - it is completely up to you to choose how you want it to look like. If you like that font then use it! The template does not have to be the way Paul likes it :D He can put whatever font he likes on his site, but you use the one you prefer :-)

Hi Alessandro,
Quote

That is certainly not what I meant nor wrote.  I like Italy and Italians, we have some former Italians here as our good friends UU
Just like everyone has different colour preferences we also have different font preferences, and like script fonts italics can be hard to read in certain situations.

Enjoy,
Paul

Guys:

I know everyone hates flash and it has security risks, etc, but if you have a widescreen monitor take a look at this map:

http://www.kpw3.com/meteo/plugins/usRadar/radar2.php

Try out the controls, too.

This is the best looking North American map I have found. I don't know what the licensing ramifications, if any, are but I really (italics, sorry Paul!) like that map.

Opinions?

Maybe,  but when I hear flash I usually don't read any further and I will definitely not consider making this as a general plugin,  sorry... It is a dead end,  very soon

No worries, I knew you wouldn't. But I still think it's a great looking map.  I may add it to a custom page or leave it where it is for now.

Why are you still awake at this hour??

Plugin Update - Space Weather 3.0

Hi guys,
just a minor update - localization and optimization. Make sure you update the menu.php, default landing page is now "index.php".

Enjoy
