All in one IP Weather Station?
« on: July 01, 2013, 01:10:39 PM »
Does an 'all in one' IP Weather Station exist?

I've been watching this site for a while but I couldn't find out if there were any 'all-in-one' IP weather stations. From what I read, there are several ways to convert the various weather stations to IP through devices each manufacturer makes, but I wanted a simpler 'single box' solution. My goal is to find something I can just hook up to an Ethernet connection and power. I can run the Ethernet cable to wherever I need it so I don't need Wi-Fi and I can provide power. Does anything like this exist?

As an example of what I'm looking for (but for different functions), I've been using something called Etherrain for a few years. It's an IP irrigation controller. It's one box that hooks up to an Ethernet connection and can be controlled over the internet or through a PC. Another example would be IP security cameras except instead of a camera at the other end, it was a weather station.

Let me know if there's anything out there or what the closest solution may be (which I'm guessing would be the 2 box solution).

I'm not sure I understand your "all-in-one" concept.

Perhaps what you want is just an IP-based console instead of a console that has to attached to a computer or appliance through a serial port?

I know there are some out there, but currently they're the exception rather than the rule.  I expect most consoles will be network capable in the next few years as long as there is a reasonable market demand...it just makes sense.

http://www.ambientweather.com/nsearch.html?query=weatherbridge  These are all-in-one IP based systems (wired or wireless).  They have some shortcoming (around logging) but are good-2-go OOTB.

Those look more like the two-box solutions he was talking about.

This sounds like what your looking for http://sinometa.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008800647979/pdtl/Barometer/1062936800/Professional-Weather-Station.htm Don't get your hopes up though. It doesn't appear this is in the trade yet. Sometimes it can take 5 years for items like this to go into circulation.

@skywatch, @bushman (2nd post)

I might be missing something but I don't see any reference to IP on the PH1003. Surely, the op is looking for something like referred to in bushman's first post, e.g. TE923W-M, that automatically sends to Weather Underground, et al, so as to avoid having to massage any data prior to uploading.

The term "all in one" to me means everything built in but I maybe wrong on that so sorry if I misunderstood that. I forgot that part about running an Ethernet cable. My bad. Those Ambient Bundles look like the way to go. Funny I always thought Rainman did a package like that too. I checked the web site and couldn't find it.

I think it's Bushman's link. I opened that link and got a warning from McAfee saying there was unsafe content blocked.

I use Acurite.  I get wireless, awesome panel display, a wireless/ethernet/internet bridge, and online data.  The instrument station is powered by solar and batteries.  I simply replace the batteries annually.

I am just curious.... Do you work for Acurite?. I see that you push Acurite quite a lot. And in some cases it does not even make sense.

No, I don't work for Acurite.

But if the OP can't find an all in one Power over Ethernet (IP) solution, then changing the batteries once a year to get the functionality Acurite is offering might be palatable.  I would suggest Davis or Rainwise, but I don't like their shortcomings for the amount of money they want.

Than you are obviously lost... Is about quality. I am not saying that Acurite is junk but is not the best ether. My neighbor bought one at Lowes and 7 month later his ISS had issues and to this day he still does.

Acurite can not be put side by side with nether of these brands. Rainwise and Davis are on a different class all together.

You get what you pay for.

I am curious to see your online data.
Can you link me if possible?

I'm going to agree with both  xcom and jakejake, While I do agree Davis stations are far better there are people who do have great experiences with Acu-rite, Oregon Scientific, Lacrosse, etc. Just the same as we recommend Davis stations I don't see a real issue with someone "pushing" an Acu-rite station if they them selves have had great experiences with them. Just as much as we have the right to "push" Davis stations others have the right to push other brand too. However I do not agree with accusing someone of working for a company just because they have good things to say about their products.  After all, we who push Davis stations, Does that imply we work for Davis?

xcom, No offence, I found your last two comments to be a bit abrasive and uncalled for. Jake likes Acu-rite stations. No reason to chew his head off for it. It's his opinion. I do agree with you that Davis stations are a hundred times better. But I also think there are better ways to respond and mitigate your thoughts and opinions.

Skywatch,

No offense taken. I some what have an issue with people just pushing too much of "something" in areas where it does not make sense.... Specially when is obvious that research/cross-referencing was not done properly. If you cross posts you will see what I mean. Any who I do tend to get a bit passionate about "things" With that said...
To OP and Others I meant no harm. :D

To the OP - the Vaisala AWS330 is your one box solution.   You can select all the sensor you like and they route to one IP based box; local display optional.  But I guarantee you that you will not like the one box price!
