Small Set, Looking for Critique, Advice, etc
« on: October 13, 2011, 05:05:00 PM »
So, I was enjoying the roll in of some heavy storms yesterday during work, and I decided to step out on our various balconies facing North, North East, and East whenever I could to take a quick snapshot.

Unfortunately, all I had was my little smart phone, which only has a 3.2 megapixel camera, so they are obviously not that great of photos, but you can see the progression of storm development in the distance, as well as as it starts to get darker. Also, the supercell structures pictured here are pretty awesome. If you can give me any pointers besides I need to get a better camera, I would greatly appreciate it :D

EDIT: Changed to links per advice from Slow Modem. :)

Supercell, couldnt get the whole thing to fit in one frame.

Beautiful tower forming directly above us.

West end of a large storm passing North of us, you can see the large tower at the right of the photo.

Looking NE, there is a rather interesting shape in the center back of the photo. Before it had become obscured by the clouds, I'm pretty sure it was an anvil.

Storm started to roll in around this time.

Love the way the sunset backs the flag.

One of my favorite shots, though I wish the lighting was better.

At this point it was getting far too dark for me to get any shots. This is only 8 minutes after the previous picture was taken.

You might want to remember that some folks still use dialup and lots of pictures lock up the browser for many minutes if we want to look at the rest of the page.  Also, more and more, people are subject to bandwidth limits, so large graphic files run that total up quickly.  In the future, perhaps put links to pictures that are stored on photobucket or another picture storage place would be better, then the people that want to look at them can see them, and the other people that look at the recent posts don't have to look at them if they don't want to.  :)

Most of the decent shots (some too dark to use FWIW) need some serious cropping.  And try to avoid radio towers in the middle of the frame.

I will work on cropping, I don't really have that kind of software at my work unfortunately, and I know the lighting is pretty sad, I had only a few seconds to snap the photos whenever I had a quick breather in between calls and the like. As for the towers, nothing I can do about that here... I work for the Police Department, and we are surrounded by towers haha. But thanks, I appreciate the advice! However, I must ask, what exactly is FWIW?

"FWIW" means "for what it's worth".  Good anvil developing in the first shot.  Some good shots with a phone and doing it on the quick.
