Bad barometer readings
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:51:57 PM »
I'm really confused with my barometer readings.   I use both Weather Display and Virtual Weather Station software.  My weather station is a Davis Vantage Pro2.   Today, for example, my Davis instrument was displaying barometer readings ranging from 16+ to 18+ in.; and, these readings are reflected in Virtual Weather Station.  However, Weather Display displays more realistic readings (30+ to 31+ in.).  My altitude is 131' above sea level.  My questions are these:

1.  What could be wrong with my Davis Pro?  and,
2.  How can Weather Display be displaying a more realistic reading when I assume it is getting data from the Davis Pro?

Thanks

its possible you have a barometer offset in WD
if the console is running on batteries only, maybe they need replacing

131 feet above sea level will not give such a low raw barometer reading

sounds like a hardware fault (with the barometer in the ISS)
as its basicly impossible to get 16 inches for barometer readings in normal operations

GBW Just in case you forgot the Barometer sensor is located in the console.

yes, which is why I first mentioned about checking the batteries
but he says the console is running on AC power

I re-calibrated (per the manual) barometer to 29.9 (current pressure as best I can tell from a wall barometer), and, within 15 minutes it has already dropped to 25.69.

Very confusing.

According to USA Today
Quote
The lowest pressure ever measured was 25.69 inches, set on Oct. 12, 1979, during Typhoon Tip in the western Pacific Ocean. The measurement was based on an instrumental observation made from a reconnaissance aircraft.

It is odd that you have the exact reading.

Time to phone Davis.

I am a believer in calling Davis for help, but first, I would unplug the AC, remove the "c" cell batterys, and let the station sit for at least 6 hours, maybe 24 ( remove any memory of whatever is screwed up ). I would then put NEW batterys in and not plug it into AC and reset per instruction manual. If it still goes off the chart, CALL DAVIS!

sorry to drag up an old thread
one thing to check, check if the AC power adaptor to the console is actualy putting out any voltage
(after first replacing the console batteries and if that fixed the problem)
