Title: Welcome to all former members of the discontinued VWS forum!
Post by: SLOweather on September 05, 2008, 05:10:36 PM
As has been noted in other threads here, the Ambient sponsored VWS forum has been shut down, presumably permanently.

As a long time contributor (using VWS since 2001) and former Global Moderator over there, I spent a lot of time on that forum, and made a lot of contributions. All of that is gone now, so let's pick it up here where we left off. I know at least 2 of my fellow GMs are members here. I hope they chime in as well.

Here I'm SLOweather. Over there, I was known as carndt. In either case, you probably can recognize me from my sig.

Thanks Chris for your effort and time.
I guess there will be no more beta testing?  I really enjoyed doing that.
I guess the only way that it could be done is if people periodically checked the link were Ed posts the newest version.  I would surmise that we can still submit problem reports through the link also.

Problem reporting:
http://www.ambientweather.com/viwestprre.html (http://www.ambientweather.com/viwestprre.html)

Recent version:
http://www.ambientweather.com/do30tr.html (http://www.ambientweather.com/do30tr.html)

If this will still work, can a moderator over here create a "VWS Beta Testing" thread?

Chis,

Yep, I'm here, but not going to say anything on the matter. Not going to get into the middle of this mess.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Bob. I wasn't trying to drag the badness over here, just welcome the disenfranchised to a new home and point out that there are familiar people here.

My bad.

Let me know which new boards need to be created to support VWS, and I'll be glad to create them.

I've added SLOweather as moderator for the VWS board, and if the other global-moderators will chime in, I'll add them too.  If you think a new Forum (collection of boards) would be helpful, let me know.

I'm very sorry to see the sudden demise of Ambient.  Having been through the demise (and reconstitution) of WeatherForum.net as WXForum.net, I know how folks feel having lost many of their valuable posts and threads .. but..
Here's a 'clean and well lighted' place for discussion and since we're beholdin' to no particular vendor, our freedom to discuss areas of mutual interest isn't curtailed by commercial interests.  We do expect that discussions will be polite and that we conduct our postings with mutual respect and helpfulness .. so far, only a very few (Spammers mostly) have been evicted for untoward conduct/postings.

So.. again, a hearty welcome to the Ambient forum folks .. hopefully you can find (and create) the knowledge base here that you supported over there.

Best regards,
Ken

BTW.. for folks wanting to capture favorite threads/postings on Ambient, use Google Search and read/save the cached pages on Google before they dissappear .. we'd done that with stuff on weatherforum.net after it's DNS demise and managed to save some of the good stuff :)

That may not be possible. The last time I checked, that forum was private and not indexable.

Thanks for the welcome.  I must admit I stumbled across this forum a while back, and it was kind of eerie, the names, many of them were the same. and setup is almost identical as well.  It was kind of like the bizarro world episode on Seinfeld....

Looks like this will be a good place to get my weather fix,

As most of you know I was also a member of the Ambient Weather Forum and also a moderator. I was a member since sometime around 2002 and was a moderator for the last, almost year. I have been a member here since the original Wx Forum. I have also been asked my Ken to be one of the moderators in the VWS section and have accepted his offer. So I will do my best to answer any questions any one might have there and in any of the other areas.

Sorry Anthony but I would work very hard to squash this idea. I personally don't want to do _anything_ that even implies that we have any affiliation with any specific manufacturer. That independence from any commercial interest is at the very heart of wxforum.net's existence.

EDIT: Specifically, I'm talking about the use of the logo. I wouldn't have an issue with Ambient linking to the forums here  ;)

Greetings,

This is Ed from Ambient Weather. I am truly sorry we had to take the forum down, it was a labor of love for John Norman and he worked hard to keep things in check.

John was a volunteer. He is loyal and passionate about a number of things. There is a very fine balance if you are a forum administrator. You must keep conflicts in check without offending people. John was contstantly walking this tight rope.

I received an email from member of the forum that they were filing a law suit for the way they were treated by other members.  This is not the first threat I received (I actually had someone threaten my life, family and business that was a user of another competing software application that was banned from the forum).

These threats grew to a crescendo, and although I am not sure if this person was serious, I sent the thread and email to my other business partners and our attorney. They all recommended I shut the forum down.

It is dissappointing and I had discussed this with John for serveral years. Each time, we decided we would remove the offending posts, and keep going. Unfortunately, I can never endorse another forum again. This is supposed to be a hobby! This is supposed to be fun!

I will say that everyone deserves a pat on the back for contributing to this forum.

You can always reach me by email: support@ambientweather.com

Ed

Hi Ed, and thanks very much for stopping by and letting folks know what had happened with the Ambient forum.  As a group of volunteers moderating this forum, we well understand how threats will make an untenable situation and force a resolution.

WXForum.net was founded two+ years ago using the principles that Gary Oldham evidenced in the old weatherforum.net: provide a place for weather enthusiasts to exchange help with weather related software, hardware and personal weather website development.  Thanks to the great membership here, that principle is still alive and well!

It's all about helping each other further our weather hobby, and learning from the experience of others.

While the forum is graced with visits from multiple software and hardware developers, we don't expect (but do welcome) their participation in the forum as their time permits.  We are strictly un-affiliated with any commercial venture and rely on the mutual aid of amateur enthusiasts for hints/tricks/tips, and that problem reports for software should be directed to the official support venue for the specific products.   So, you're very welcome to drop by, see, and (if you like) respond to the conversations, but don't view it as a requirement at all :D

Thanks again for your explanation,
best regards,

Ken

It has been the extremely rare occasion (maybe one time a thread was shut down) that any of the administrators have had to resort to any heavy handed tactics here at wxforum.net. In all honesty this has probably been the easiest to administrate discusion board I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with.

We want to keep it that way, but the only way that can continue to happen is that we all practice respect and civility to one another. That has never really been an issue here, but as more and more folks join the potential for conflict rises as well. That's the nature of online discussion. Please try to remember:

There will be disagreements. That is the nature of discussion. There's no reason that they have to degrade into arguments though. I know from experience that this can be difficult. At some point in every group, if you hang around long enough, there will be someone that you just plain can not get along with. Ignore their posts if you can't be civil. There is no excuse for personal attacks. Take it offline if you must. The rest of us don't want to have to wade through a stinking pile.

At some point someone is going to write something that is going to tick you off. Almost all of us will make the mistake of pulling the trigger without stepping back and cooling down at some point. You might only do it once every 10 years, but most of us at some point will do it. I'm guilty of it. Should you be guilty, be an adult, apologize and drop it. I'm not saying you have to necessarily apologize to the person you went off on, I know that can be difficult :-), but an acknowledgment to the group that you messed up is probably in order.

And remember that most people find wxforum.net looking for help! Be gracious in offering that help. Because you may have answered the question a thousand times this month doesn't mean that the noob recognizes that. Should they have done a search? Probably, but that doesn't mean you have to be a jerk about it. In most cases a simple link to the post that answers the question is all that is needed.

Good Evening Folks...

I'm not here to point fingers, cause problems, etc. But I do want you all to know why I did what I did. This way nobody can be the preverbial hero for causing the 'reactor' to blow... So I just stopped by to say a few things and I'll be on my way. It was with deep regret we had to do what we did. But as you see in Ed's message here, there was a reason why I held the reigns so tight. It really had nothing to do with the recent email that one person sent to Ed, (although that was the final blow and decision.. you know who you were!).. but a collective barrage over the years and as you read, even threats to his family.

I know I'm probably hated by most here and that is ok. It is what I accepted to do and I expected no less if necessary. But his message depicted everything.
What I do in the realm of understanding protection, I do well. Sometimes what I have had to do was not easy because I'm not generally a hard arse. I did what I had to do to protect Ed's business, family and well being. It's what I'm good at.

There was a lot of jealousy through the years. Some that started these threats that were not just in the form of law suits. As you have seen above, the threats grew deeper than that. Like Ed said, it's suppose to be fun. But not everyone wanted to keep it that way.

Over the years, Ed and I have had quite a few arguments, and so on. If you were with VWS before the last forum, you'd always know that Ed got screwed over royally by a previous associate. (Did you know that he wanted to throw the towel in and give up on VWS because of all the grief? I'd like to believe I my pleaing with him helped keep it going - as I spent hours on the phone with him to talk him into staying with the project)...

As a result, I saw it in his and every bodies best interests that security be tight sometimes... People needed to be stifled, etc. Personally, I could care less what people have to say as long as they could do it without fighting and arguing. If I seen the slightest bit of disharmony, my red light went on and I tightened things down. Again, it's what I'm good at whether people liked it or not... here or in an outside world.

I'd like to apologize to everyone here and from the old forums... If it was any other place or reason, things would have been less strict and/or better.
For these reasons, we decided to pull the plug. Now you can understand I hope why Ed distant himself from the public. We all know we cannot please everyone in the world, but we tried. It broke my heart to pull the plug because I'd like to think I had friends there too. But again, nature of the beast and I knew what I was always in for. I had many people say thank you to me over the years as well as tell me they wouldn't have that job for anything. People that know me personally, know my capabilities and are happy to know I have their backs. I had Ed's family and business's back at all times with one mission in mind. Try to provide support where he could not and protect his interests from outside harm.

To the folks that were disgrunteled behind the lines, sent nasty emails, cursed me out. Now you can see what some people have already said, "You NEVER know what goes on behind the scenes and why things are the way they are". I'm sure most of you, if you'd have known why we were the way we were, you would have confided more in my decisions and backed off. But I never even told the moderators why I did what I did. Most of it till Ed's message was in confidentialty which I never broken unless necessary.

So let this be an end to all the good and bad... let VWS and all it's users reign and have fun... it's a great hobby and I'll miss a lot of you.
Thanks to my old moderators... I know we had moments.. but no hard feelings... If anyone needs me for anything I'm always around. Just drop me an email.
I think Anole said it right... listen and remember that there are others out there that have feelings too.

Take care and best regards, no hard feelings... and I have no grudges against anyone.

John, WXWP

It truly is a bad situation when push comes to shove in any walk of life.. But it's almost becoming a way of life it seems.
Sometimes things get mis read or whatever and mushroom out of control from there. Whatever the case may be some one has to stop it...
sometimes for the protection of ..well sometimes almost life and property.

I hope I am not stepping on any toes or any thing with any posts I may make here. I always strive to help any one I can if possible.
Sometimes I have questions too but I will strive to make that as lesser amount as possible
Forums such as this and the other mention location are excellent outlets for information and in some cases it may be the only outlet for "sensible"
answers ..give the out sourcing that is being done now days..

Anyway..As the saying goes "All Good Things Must End"  that may be true but sometimes good things come from the ruins of others.!! That may very be demonstrated here!

Any thing I have ever learned is available if it'll help some one down the line.. After all isn't that what it's all about ?

With that being said.. I will shut up and get out of the way to make way for more informative and educational programming

Thanks In Advance For Everything!!

I received an email from member of the forum that they were filing a law suit for the way they were treated by other members.  This is not the first threat I received (I actually had someone threaten my life, family and business that was a user of another competing software application that was banned from the forum).

I for one am glad that it didn't escalate into a much more serious situation as could have been the situation with the threats
Too much hostility in the world today  as a whole!

Very interesting situation.  I'm still digesting it.  I am pleased that Ed himself took the time to explain the situation, it shows character, especially in light of his aversion to forum involvement.  Thanks Ed.  I'm sure VWS will get ample support in this venue, without the ever-present drama of the Ambient forum.

Now let's make this the premier forum for weather enthusiasts!

Yep,
It sue would be tough to be right in the middle
of a fix or something and have that happen !
Hopefully no body was in that predicament!
It's definitely great to have a place to "hang out'
and at least ask for help or an answer to a question =D>
Ya never know it may turn out more educational
here than the other place ! Like so may other things
time alone can tell LOL!
Somewhat Ironic how I found the link for this place..I got it from the Ambient Forum
a month or s ago. I had noticed it several times but really didn't know if
it was for the general public or not but I finally decided it "should" be since it was advertised there
So I tried to sign up and  IT WORKED.. pretty much history from there to now
Glad they did let me in ! Hopefully we can all learn from each other and  It will be a great place

At any rate from one new person to another
Welcome  from here anyhow LOL!

Absolutely!!
By Ed doing that there's no guesswork as to what happened. No more wondering
well..did I maybe do something, was it something I said  and so on!
Now it's all out in the open and everybody knows that it won't be back again!
But the good thing is  the software will hopefully be supported by the info given and hopefully here as well.
So it's time to do what you said  " Make this the premier forum for weather enthusiasts "

Hi everyone.

Another refugee who found his way back to the light!

Yep,
It sue would be tough to be right in the middle

Hopefully no body was in that predicament!

Actually, I picked this weekend to move my VWS to a new computer! When I started to run into a few bugs, I remebered the "transferring VWS to another computer" thread on the old board and clicked on my old bookmark to become enlightened (I hadn't checked the Ambient board for a few months). Imagine my shock and horror to see the simple one line message "The Support Forum is no longer active".

Fortunately, after a quick dose of panic, a few choice words, and several hours of frustration, I was able to get the transfer working. Shortly thereafter I stumbled in here. All is well. I look forward to hearing from all of you again!

Regards

Moose

Me being a dog lover I just had to ask. Mine is my latest Cocker Spaniel . He came from

Getting back to things running smooth.... If I could just keep my DSL connection running I'd be in great shape!

Just incase you run into anymore bugs here's a link to Ed's VWS faq.

There's one specifically in there about moving VWS to a new computer.

Hi Wayne,

Yes to answer your question that is my dog. He is a 4 y.o Irish setter, we rescued him 2 years ago from a farm where he had been chained to a concrete filled oildrum with a 6 foot length of chain since he was a pup. He is mad but very loveable and great with kids.
i also have a springer spaniel which was also rescued from an uncaring home. i don't know about you but I prefer dogs to people any time!!!

I have just found out about this new forum.

Strictly speaking these forums aren't new. We've been here for a few years. The October 2007 dates you see in the stats represent the switch from phpBB to SMF for the forum software.

EDIT: Gary's original weatherforum.net was in place back as far as at least Oct. 2005 and maybe before that.

Regardless, welcome aboard :-)

Hey that's great news!!!  We had a Golden retriever we once got from a friend who it actually came to during a bad thunderstorm. He was living in a place
where he could not care for the animal and we took her. She was a great weather dog! She could predict a severe thunder storm lots better than anything the NWS had!
She would get under our bed if it was going to be really bad  and as the storm neared she would yank the electrical plugs to the radio and such from the outlet with her mouth!  No kidding!
We had a close friend that had lots of room when at the time we weren't blessed with much and he had a fit over her so now she's living with them and having the time of her life!

I gotta agree with you I prefer dogs over a lot of the people you have to deal with in life !!!

I had a golden retriever that we just put down a couple of months ago.  He was terrified of power outages.  One morning I was in the shower and had just lathered up my head.  We have a walk in shower.   The power went out.  Before I could get the soap out of my eyes I had a wet dog standing in the shower with me shivering..... This is the same dog the UPS driver was afraid of......

Greg,
That's sad about your Golden.. Sorry to hear that!
My furs here are just like biological children! The wife and I have no children and
most likely will not have. I have heard talk before that animals (dogs) are dumb.
Animals are a lot smarter than some give credit!
I've just got to train one of mine to reset the DSL modem when it flops numerous times daily as it does!!
That would be the trick!!

I don't understand why boards like this generate drama.  I can understand it on generally social or political boards, but boards like this and Ambient are primarily technical focusing on product support.

I don't see room for drama.

And it had been one of those days where my brain was running on aux power ( if at all )
I just failed to see what your reply was intended to mean

At any rate it certainly is a good thing to have support for Ambient other than the
"official outlets" that Ed maintains if for no other reasons it should be quicker!
One person working toward answering questions is not match for many for sure.

I can say that personally the "data base" must be increasing ! I was inquiring about a problem
I have from time to time that I had touched on before over there and never really got much response .
I got a response quick from a person here who was experiencing the same problem!
Now I know it's not totally isolated to my setup

I just chuckled as I read this line. This was my expirience as well. After several attempts on the "official" site I was told over & over I was alone and no one else had reported said problem. Checked my computer, checked my ISP, checked I had things installed properly. Always seemed like you where pointed to anything other than "The Weather Software". :?

It is similiar to the Linux communities which have popped up. Some are all arrogant techies and tell you to RTFM, others seem to have an atmosphere where everyone tries to help!

Thanks to all here for the help!

Until I found a link to this weather forum from the Ambient wikipedia I felt totally abandoned, I really enjoyed the years with the Ambient weather forumn, I didn't post much unless i felt I could really add value to the question.

However I did get a lot of help reading all the posts and following the links given.

I currently post my weather to:
Weather underground
CWOP
weaterhforyou

I hope that we could move some of the data from that Ambient forum, but as I have seen posted in this link that probably will not happen. We spent a lot of time putting in all of that data, it is a shame to loose it.

SLOweather/Carndt/Chris and everyone else that supports this board

Thanks for the new home.

I've never been a huge source for new posts, but I have enjoyed many hours reading about everyone's experiences with their stations, cameras, etc.  I was sad when I got the "forum down" banner at AmbientSupport.  I happened on this site with a lucky google search and discovered that I had missed the links on the wiki page.   There is no way to place a value on the help that is available through a board like this, and I just wanted to add my voice to the others that have said thanks.

Thank You all.

Regarding the avatar and username:

A few years ago, I finally got around to registering a fictitious business name for ImageSalsa and MovieSalsa's parent company.  Hence, Data Crunch Technologies.  The web site has been a long time under snail-pace development, but hopefully this will provide the catalyst for me to get some work done on it :)

I know of an archive service (maybe others exist) that saves a snapshot of web pages.  I did a Google search and found it here:
http://www.archive.org/index.php

I entered www(.)ambientweather(.)com and got some results.

This link shows a list of dates when the ambient weather page was archived.
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.ambientweather.com/

I used the links in the most recent archived web page to find the Ambient Weather forum login page.  That page is here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080202171206/ambientwxsupport.com/smf/index.php

I don't remember my login/password so I did not attempt to log in to this archive page.
I have no idea if it will work - but someone that remembers their login might try.

I too looked in the Google search cache and archive services, but to no avail -- the Ambient forum required member login in order to view the content, so all the archived pages (irrespective of topic) will contain the Login page contents .. just the way it worked.  Attempting login to a cached page in the archive or on Google will not work.. there's nothing for the page to connect to in order to process the request.

My understanding is that the DB for the old Ambient forum is not available and there is really no benefit to anyone in mourning (or decrying) it's unavailability.

It's time to start building a new KB here.

Best regards,
Ken

Yup. Verified that with WXWP today. It's all been deleted. Time to let it go.

Agreed. I'll start a thread of things people want to know, or contributed over time, so we can all figure out what we have to contribute.

WOW - I haven't visited this forum or the Ambient Forum for quite some time and had the same feeling as many others about the demise of the Ambient Forum. At first I thought I had entered the wrong URL. After several attempts I actually read what had come up and then quickly switched over to this one to see if there was any news.

I am sorry to see the Ambient Forum gone (and the loss of so much good information) but really happy that there is now a single weather forum that covers all of the software offerings. It really makes it easier for everyone to go to one source for information.

Has the Ambient board DB been dumped?

If not, is there any chance to retrieve and import some of those threads that had tips and reference information?

The Ambient forum has been closed and is gone.

Bob

I understand it's closed, but that doesn't mean the entire MySQL database of posts has been dumped.  Has anybody bothered to ask?

Closed and GONE is what I said.

Well Bill, what did you expect.  ](*,)

Considering the events over there and reason for the shutdown, don't you think a better response would have been "Yes, we've checked and the database has been deleted so we are unable to import anything from there." ?

Nope, not in the least. Why? Because I didn't have to check. I knew beyond a doubt it was gone. Even if it wasn't, I knew things wouldn't have been allowed to be imported here. As for the reasons why it was shut down, the ones that brought the demise that hang here, you know who you are, and so do I. We will just leave it at that.

All

I'm so glad I found you all! I just finally ordered my Davis WX to replace my old LaCrosse. I wanted to look up some info on setting up the data logger and BOOM ...no more Forum. Great timing eh? Anyway, it good to see everyone here. The one bummer is that we have all lost our status...Sr Drip, Jr drip...etc... :( ...but at least I was still able to keep my handle.

I'm in shock   I hadn't been on the Ambient Forum in quite some time.  What a shame!  I was not a frequent poster but I learned tons because of the collective knowledge base.  It's great to see many of the members over here now.  Thanks everyone for providing a new home.

Welcome!

It was shut down by the owner because of irrate users calling him, yelling & screaming, making demands and threating legal action. Legal action because they didn't get their way. He said the hell with this and pulled the plug.

Everyone blames the kids these days, I think this more of a parental problem myself! LOL.

Parenting requires thick skin doesn't it? :-P

I just found out the ambient forum was gone..  Also his blog hasn't been updated http://ambientweather.blogspot.com/ (http://ambientweather.blogspot.com/) hasn't been updated since March of 2007..

Anyone know what the current stable version is?  I am running Davis 14.00 P35 http://www.ambientweather.com/versionhistory.html (http://www.ambientweather.com/versionhistory.html)  says 14.00p022 is the current version.  Wouldn't P35 be newer than 022?

Welcome To The Group!!!
The shutdown was a shock and surprise to many..including myself.
After hearing the actual reason it was obvious why it happened.

A lot of valuable data was lost over there but I do believe we have gained most all of it plus  a bunch more here!
The combined experience here makes for an extremely knowledgeable forum ! About all the answers are here or can be found through here :)

Welcome to the forum transplants!   ;)

....I picked this weekend to move my VWS to a new computer! When I started to run into a few bugs, I remebered the "transferring VWS to another computer" thread on the old board and clicked on my old bookmark to become enlightened (I hadn't checked the Ambient board for a few months). Imagine my shock and horror to see the simple one line message "The Support Forum is no longer active". ....

Just incase you run into anymore bugs here's a link to Ed's VWS faq.

http://ambientweather.wikispaces.com/Virtual+Weather+Station

There's one specifically in there about moving VWS to a new computer.

http://ambientweather.wikispaces.com/Move+Virtual+Weather+Station+to+one+computer+to+another

Little late now I know.   #-o  But that faq list is going to be pretty valuable to all of us until more of the trials and tribulations are posted here.

Thanks Mark
I to am changing computers for my PWS, and getting everything back on line.

I received an email from member of the forum that they were filing a law suit for the way they were treated by other members.

Sorry, but that's just silly, whoever you are/were.

If you don't like the responses you get (or don't get) on a board, there is no obligation for you to continue to visit that board.

I know this is a VERY old post, but how much "water" would this hold???  After all, it is a post in a public forum!  GEEZZZ!!!!  Why do people think they can threaten others on a forum?  stupid!

Oh well... we all go on!  \:D/
