Mounting ISS on 5" dia. Pole
« on: May 12, 2009, 02:26:51 PM »
Is it possible to mount the ISS on a pole with an outside diameter of 5 inches or so?  Planning on putting on my 40ft crankup tower.

Thanks

No, it will not mount to a 5" dia. pole.  You will need an adapter.

So along the same line is there any reason why I should NOT mount the anemometer at the 40' level and the ISS at the 15' to 19' level? Why I ask is that after the 20' level is the tube that cranks up, my thinking is to just get the wind stuff up higher and keep the rain and temp. package down lower on the stationary section.  Does this really fly in the face of SOP's for siting?

Here's some good info for sensor locations:  http://home.comcast.net/~dshelms/CWOP_Guide.pdf

I think the standard for anemometers is 30 feet.

Just make sure you can get to it if you need to tinker with it.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standard for the height for measuring wind is 10 meters (32.8 feet).  Keep the ISS at a convenient place for servicing.
The largest size of U bolt that will fit in the bracket is 2 1/2 inches.  Those are usually so long that you'll have to cut the bolt length with a hacksaw.  They protrude too far and the rain funnel cone won't fit.
You can attach the ISS against a flat (wood) surface using 2 lag bolts.

Might consider making a bracket of sorts to move the ISS away slightly from a 5 inch pole.  Might be cause for a big rain shadow.

But yeah,  put it at a convenient height to any service it may require.  Cleaning, etc.

I put mine of roof because of neighbor kid traffic.
